WASHINGTON, DC – Destination DC, the official destination marketing organization for the nation’s capital, welcomes visitors to experience the reopening of a landmark museum and buzzworthy new exhibits this summer. When combined with a packed calendar of sports, festivals and free events, DC becomes the perfect city for an unforgettable getaway. Begin planning your trip at washington.org/summer.

On June 21, the Folger Shakespeare Library, featuring the world’s largest Shakespeare collection, will celebrate its grand reopening following an extensive, four-year renovation. The reimagined space will boast two modern, state of the art exhibition halls featuring literary and historical pieces that have seldom been displayed to the public. Welcoming new gardens, collaborative research spaces and expanded visitor amenities designed with inclusivity and accessibility in mind are just a few of the additions to this Capitol Hill landmark.

The city boasts a plethora of new and renovated hotels to experience. The famed St. Regis, Four Seasons and Capital Hilton have all unveiled renovations. Exciting rebrands include the Hotel AKA Washington Circle in Foggy Bottom and Hotel Nell – Union Market in burgeoning NoMa. In addition, a portion of the phased enhancements to the highly anticipated Salamander DC hotel, situated along the revitalized Southwest Waterfront, are expected to be complete by the end of summer. A luxury two-story spa and chef Kwame Onwuachi’s new restaurant, Dōgon, will follow. Potential travelers can find deals and book directly at stay.washington.org.

“This summer, there’s only one place where you can spend the day engaging with the work of virtuosos like Shakespeare, then spend the night consuming the work of acclaimed chefs,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, II, president and CEO, DDC. “There’s only one place where you can see star-studded concerts, cultural celebrations and fireworks with an iconic backdrop for free. There’s only one place where you can find this combination of excitement and value.”

Summer is highlighted by iconic festivals and events, particularly over holiday weekends. Salute active-duty military and veterans at the Rolling to Remember honor ride and patriotic concert (May 26) and America’s largest Memorial Day parade (May 27). Celebrate DC’s LGBTQ+ community during Capital Pride (May 31-June 9), a prelude to WorldPride in the nation’s capital next summer. Skyscanner’s Savings Generator Can Save 31% on Flights for Summer Vacation

May 24, 2023
Global travel site Skyscanner has launched the new and expanded summer edition of its Savings Generator tool to help travelers save on vacation travel © Karen Rubin/goingplacesfarandnear.com

While 61% of Americans are planning to get away this summer, 69% have yet to book their summer vacation, according to  Skyscanner’s latest research in association with OnePoll. Even as 74% of US travelers feel confident they know how to find the best vacation deals. global travel site Skyscanner has launched the new and expanded summer edition of its Savings Generator tool to help travelers save big this summer.

Whether you’ve yet to book your trip or are tempted to book another vacation this summer (82% of Americans that have booked are tempted if the price if right), Skyscanner’s Savings Generator is on hand to find you the cheapest week of the summer to travel to a selection of the most popular routes from the US including to the UK, Italy and Spain.

The global travel sitecurrently searches over 80 billion prices every single day, so Skyscanner’s experts have crunched the numbers to share some simple dos and don’ts for grabbing the best bargain this summer:

1. Travel the last week of the school summer holidays (instead of the first) and save 31%
Despite over half of Americans (54%) sharing that they know that there are cheaper weeks of the summer holidays to travel, Skyscanner’s data shows that on average travelers can save 31% by travelling the last week versus the first week of the school summer holidays- meaning an average saving of $1224 for a family of four!

2. Want to save big this summer?  Travel on a Sunday (most of the time)!

Travelers who are flexible and can fly on less popular days of the week can save up to 5% on the cost of their flights this July and August according to Skyscanner’s Summer Savings Generator. An added bonus? The airports are likely to be less crowded too.  Since 73% of Americans say they would be willing to change the day and/ or week of their summer vacations to save this year, it pays to do your research by using Skyscanner’s Whole Month view.

3. There are still cheap deals – just search EVERYWHERE for the very best prices

US travelers yet to book their summer trip estimate flights will cost $223 per person on average, however Skyscanner can reveal deals to vacation favorites including Nashville from $73, Orlando from $70, and Las Vegas from $169 round trip in June. Let Skyscanner’s algorithm find the cheapest deal – just type in ‘Everywhere’ with your travel dates.

“We know how much US travelers look forward to and research their summer vacations, especially this year,” comments Skyscanner’s Travel Trends and Destination Expert Laura Lindsay. “Therefore it’s our duty to analyze all the data we have access to and share this insight via our Savings Generator, updated for Summer 2023  so US travelers know how to make their money go further this summer.

“Our research shows that Americans are willing to make sacrifices, including fewer meals out and less takeaways and coffees during the year, in order to save for their summer vacations, but are less likely to shop around in the way they would when doing their weekly shopping or purchasing clothes. We’re aware that the summer can be a costly time to travel, so we’ve updated our Savings Generator to help US travelers easily see how to get away within budget this summer.

“There’s so much money to be saved if consumers compare their travel options, so we’re building the tools for travelers to do this quickly and easily.  We encourage all travelers to take note of our savvy tips and utilize the tools on our site like our Calendar View and Everywhere Search to save big this summer,” Lindsay says.

The Skyscanner/OnePoll research conducted in May 2023 with 2000 US respondents also showed:

  • Thirsty for travel but leaving it to the last minute– while 61% of Americans are planning to get away this summer, 30% have yet to book. And of those yet to book, 43% cited they’re still deciding on dates and 42% are waiting to find the best deals
  • Americansthink they’re more travel deal savvy than perhaps they actually are – while 55% of American travelers feel like they found a good travel deal this year, only 4% are searching for travel during the cheapest possible week of the summer
  • Keen for further escapes this summer82% of Americans say they would be tempted to book another summer holiday this year if the price were right.
  • Americans think flights will cost more than what’s actually available – Americans yet to book their summer trip estimate flights will cost $223 on average, however Skyscanner can reveal deals to Chicago, Miami, and Nantucket for less than $150 return
  • Flexibility rules– 73% of American travelers say they would be willing to change the day and/ or week of their summer holiday to a different time to save money

Skyscanner is a global leader in travel helping travelers plan and book their trip with ease and confidence. Every month Skyscanner connects over 100 million travelers in 52 countries and 30 languages to more than 1200 trusted travel partners so they can find the best flight, hotel or car hire options.

Sandy Pines Camping Resort in Kennebunkport Opens Second Season with New Glamping Accommodations, Programming

May 11, 2018

New custom-designed glamping accommodations open at Sandy Pines Campground, Kennebunkport, Maine, in its second season (photo by Douglas Merriam)

Kennebunkport, ME Sandy Pines Campground opens May 11, 2018 for its second season with a roster of curated new experiences, custom designed glamping accommodations and engaging programming benefiting every level and style of camper – from RVers and traditional tent campers to glampers.

“When guests come to Sandy Pines, we aim to immerse them in the best of Maine – its natural beauty, nostalgic charm, a feeling of community – and set the stage for making new memories each time they visit,” said co-founder and hotelier Tim Harrington. “During our first season, we took note of what campers enjoyed most and built on those types of offerings for 2018.”

Sandy Pines opened in June 2017 with a plethora of resort-level amenities, including a rustic Grand Lodge, General Store stocked with local Maine provisions and a dedicated s’mores section, heated saltwater pool, Kids’ Kamp, lawn games and more.

For Summer 2018, campers can look forward to weekly entertainment like TBT Movie Nights by the Pool, screening throwback flicks served with popcorn and ice cream bars; Saturday Night Fever, where campers can convene for live music, a burger bash and cocktails – mixers provided, BYOB; and Sundae Funday ice cream buffet complete with toppings bar.

The Snack Bar will offer tasty breakfast options such as freshly baked pastries and breakfast burritos, plus grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, perfect for easy outdoor dining. A Maine visit isn’t complete without lobster and Sandy Pines campers can pre-order lobster dinners for delivery, which include steamed lobster, butter, sides, dessert and utensils.

Grownups don’t get all the fun! New Kids’ Kamp activities will keep tiny tykes busy crafting dreamcatchers, learning to build teepee shelters, tie-dying keepsake t-shirts and more. Parents can loosen the leash on their free-roaming pre-teens but ensure they’re well-fed with Camper Cash, redeemable for ice cream, the snack bar or other in-park activities.

Glamping

Nature enthusiasts angling for elevated accommodations can choose from several new options available for nightly rental, beginning late June 2018.

This season, Sandy Pines will unveil 12 Camp Carriages, akin to stylish cottages on wheels. These retreats are uniquely decorated by Kennebunkport designer Krista Stokes and are outfitted with king-size beds, A/C, exterior window shutters, fire pits and seating areas.  Krista also collaborated on designing 12 Hideaway Huts, wooden A-frames that are sleek and modern, yet rustic. The cozy structures feature full-size beds and lighting with outdoor seating areas and fire pits.

Lastly, Sandy Pines will add four more of their popular safari-style Glamp Tents, bringing the total to 16 professionally decorated accommodations, each with unique elements like antiques, four-post beds, chandeliers and more. Kennebunkport’s Louise Hurlbutt designed the four new tents, named Tradewinds, Robin’s Nest, Elements and Under the Stars.

Themed Weekends

Sandy Pines will expand their experiential park programming with new themed weekends. The first is Vintage Camping Weekend, June 15-17 during Father’s Day weekend, where owners of restored, DIY and unique campers will converge to swap stories, play games, enjoy live music, BBQ and the Great Outdoors. All park guests are invited to get in on the fun and tour the vintage campers.

To celebrate the Fall Equinox on September 22, Sandy Pines will host a family-focused “Great Maine Camp Out.” Campers of all ages are invited to spend the night, take an astronomy class, learn techniques for campfire cooking, listen to fireside storytelling by local authors and more.

Located minutes from Goose Rocks Beach in charming Kennebunkport, Sandy Pines Campground provides an experience that is authentically Maine, embodying the best of the Pine Tree State’s coast – natural beauty, salty breezes and a small-town ambiance. New England charm is infused throughout the grounds, from the rustic Grand Lodge to the General Store stocked with Maine provisions, including a section solely for s’mores creations, and a multitude of outdoor activities. The park’s campsites cater to traditional tent campers and RVers along with the option of booking professionally-decorated Glamp Tents, Camp Carriages and Hideaway Huts for nightly rental or purchasing a park model RV “tiny home.”
