Skyscanner’s Savings Generator Can Save 31% on Flights for Summer Vacation

May 24, 2023
Global travel site Skyscanner has launched the new and expanded summer edition of its Savings Generator tool to help travelers save on vacation travel © Karen Rubin/

While 61% of Americans are planning to get away this summer, 69% have yet to book their summer vacation, according to  Skyscanner’s latest research in association with OnePoll. Even as 74% of US travelers feel confident they know how to find the best vacation deals. global travel site Skyscanner has launched the new and expanded summer edition of its Savings Generator tool to help travelers save big this summer.

Whether you’ve yet to book your trip or are tempted to book another vacation this summer (82% of Americans that have booked are tempted if the price if right), Skyscanner’s Savings Generator is on hand to find you the cheapest week of the summer to travel to a selection of the most popular routes from the US including to the UK, Italy and Spain.

The global travel sitecurrently searches over 80 billion prices every single day, so Skyscanner’s experts have crunched the numbers to share some simple dos and don’ts for grabbing the best bargain this summer:

1. Travel the last week of the school summer holidays (instead of the first) and save 31%
Despite over half of Americans (54%) sharing that they know that there are cheaper weeks of the summer holidays to travel, Skyscanner’s data shows that on average travelers can save 31% by travelling the last week versus the first week of the school summer holidays- meaning an average saving of $1224 for a family of four!

2. Want to save big this summer?  Travel on a Sunday (most of the time)!

Travelers who are flexible and can fly on less popular days of the week can save up to 5% on the cost of their flights this July and August according to Skyscanner’s Summer Savings Generator. An added bonus? The airports are likely to be less crowded too.  Since 73% of Americans say they would be willing to change the day and/ or week of their summer vacations to save this year, it pays to do your research by using Skyscanner’s Whole Month view.

3. There are still cheap deals – just search EVERYWHERE for the very best prices

US travelers yet to book their summer trip estimate flights will cost $223 per person on average, however Skyscanner can reveal deals to vacation favorites including Nashville from $73, Orlando from $70, and Las Vegas from $169 round trip in June. Let Skyscanner’s algorithm find the cheapest deal – just type in ‘Everywhere’ with your travel dates.

“We know how much US travelers look forward to and research their summer vacations, especially this year,” comments Skyscanner’s Travel Trends and Destination Expert Laura Lindsay. “Therefore it’s our duty to analyze all the data we have access to and share this insight via our Savings Generator, updated for Summer 2023  so US travelers know how to make their money go further this summer.

“Our research shows that Americans are willing to make sacrifices, including fewer meals out and less takeaways and coffees during the year, in order to save for their summer vacations, but are less likely to shop around in the way they would when doing their weekly shopping or purchasing clothes. We’re aware that the summer can be a costly time to travel, so we’ve updated our Savings Generator to help US travelers easily see how to get away within budget this summer.

“There’s so much money to be saved if consumers compare their travel options, so we’re building the tools for travelers to do this quickly and easily.  We encourage all travelers to take note of our savvy tips and utilize the tools on our site like our Calendar View and Everywhere Search to save big this summer,” Lindsay says.

The Skyscanner/OnePoll research conducted in May 2023 with 2000 US respondents also showed:

  • Thirsty for travel but leaving it to the last minute– while 61% of Americans are planning to get away this summer, 30% have yet to book. And of those yet to book, 43% cited they’re still deciding on dates and 42% are waiting to find the best deals
  • Americansthink they’re more travel deal savvy than perhaps they actually are – while 55% of American travelers feel like they found a good travel deal this year, only 4% are searching for travel during the cheapest possible week of the summer
  • Keen for further escapes this summer82% of Americans say they would be tempted to book another summer holiday this year if the price were right.
  • Americans think flights will cost more than what’s actually available – Americans yet to book their summer trip estimate flights will cost $223 on average, however Skyscanner can reveal deals to Chicago, Miami, and Nantucket for less than $150 return
  • Flexibility rules– 73% of American travelers say they would be willing to change the day and/ or week of their summer holiday to a different time to save money

How to Avoid Crowds, High Air Fares this Summer? Explore These Alternatives

May 17, 2023
Instead of an Italian grotto, dive into the enchanting waters of Yucatan, Mexico’s cenotes! © Laini Miranda/

How to avoid the crowds and the high European air fares this summer? Here are three alternatives to explore:

Instead of walking the streets of Amsterdam…

…Venture to Aruba, the island known for its Dutch influence, seafood, and flavorful, creative combinations. Located on the convenient Palm Beach, the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is the perfect place to check in to experience all that the island has to offer. No matter what time of year visitors are in Aruba, they’ll get a taste of Aruban culture. Island events and festivals take place throughout the year such as Soul Beach Musical Festival and Carnival. Just a short ride from the hotel, the capital city of Oranjestad offers visitors local shops, boutiques, restaurants, and bars on charming streets with Dutch architecture and colorful buildings. For a look into history, families can explore caves where Arawak Indians dwelled and for underwater explorations, groups can go snorkeling or scuba diving to discover massive shipwreck sites.

Instead of exploring an Italian Grotto…

…Dive into the gorgeous waters of Mexico’s cenotes! With quick & affordable direct flights from almost every major US city on the eastern and southern seaboard, it’s no surprise that Cancun is a coveted vacation destination. With IG-worthy ocean views and easy access to the Yucatan’s most amazing sights including the colonial city of Valladolis and the ruins of Chiten Itza – Cancun is a popular destination for travelers who need an escape from reality. By day, guests of the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa can get the party started with adrenaline-packed watersports swimming with whale sharks, day trips to Island Mujeres and unique twists on the classic margarita (one resort offers 150!). At night, the Cancun strip comes to life at spots like the iconic Coco Bongo complete with Vegas showgirls and music/impersonations from legendary superstars. The party continues at the Miami-style nightclubs with pulsing DJ music, vibrant light shows and more ‘gram worthy tequila cocktails.

Instead of a trip to one of Greece’s 6,000 islands…

…Check into Caerula Mar Club on the secluded South Andros island in the Bahamas. Rested on Aptly nicknamed “The Sleeping Giant,” the island of South Andros is the perfect destination for pure relaxation. One of The Bahamas largest islands with just over 2,000 residents, this uncrowded paradise is home to the world’s third largest barrier reef, mystical blue hole ocean caves, and 90+ miles of pristine beaches. South Andros is approximately an hour-long flight from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and home to its own international customs, which makes getting there a breeze. The untouched beaches and blissful sounds of nature will make you feel like you are a lifetime away from the States, and all of your worries!

Expert Commentary
What are your predictions for the 2023 summer travel season (percent of Americans traveling; most popular destinations; busiest travel times)?
“Travel will most likely increase this summer compared to 2022, both in-terms of number of travelers and travel spending. There is still a strong demand to want to travel. The pandemic created a stronger demand for outdoor recreation. That continues today, thus popular destinations will be beach destinations and national parks. The busy travel season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. During summer we seeing the highest demand for travel coming from families since there is no school. This tends to make mid-June to early August the busiest travel times. If you want during summer and avoid the larger summer crowds try to plan a trip in early June or later in August.”
Dan Plunkett, Ph.D. – Director, UWL Tourism Research Institute; Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
“Domestic Travel: Short-haul, drive-to destinations will continue to be popular. Weekend destinations, theme parks, state, and national parks will be packed during the summer travel months. People will be taking more frequent, but shorter trips, staying at lower category hotels and short-term rentals, but will be traveling in 2023. International travel will continue to be popular in 2023, especially in Europe, which is eager to accept more Americans. Selected countries like Japan in Asia will also see significant increases in outgoing travel from the U.S. Once again, people will be taking shorter trips internationally but will be traveling.”
Max Starkov – Adjunct Professor, New York University
What are the costliest travel mistakes?

“Not planning in advance! Though it can be a fun adventure to wing it, take a last-minute trip, and hope for the best, these days almost everything should be booked well before you travel. That means flights, trains and boats, accommodations, museums, and other attractions entry, and even restaurants. Book in advance to avoid disappointment! Another mistake is not taking advantage of various credit card and points promotions. Many airline mileage plans and credit cards allow you to collect points that can come in very handy later on. Some of the higher-end credit cards also offer valuable perks such as travel and rental car insurance, hotel elite status, airport lounge access, and travel discounts.”
Michael Pretes – Professor and Chair, Department of Geoscience, University of North Alabama
“First, do not wait until the last moment. Prices mostly rise. Next, it is important to research destinations and learn your options. This includes everything from visa and vaccination requirements to hotel options. Third, the airlines make approximately $5 billion annually on baggage fees. I believe many Americans are overpacking. Overpacking is likely to cost billions. Fourth, I am against most forms of travel insurance. Yet, there are times when it is wise. I recommend a credit card that includes travel insurance if you are a frequent flyer. I have been saving thousands in recent years by only booking flights and hotels with a card that includes great travel insurance. Finally, additional fees are adding up. wi-fi, parking, resort fees, and more are unexpected by many consumers. We pay seemingly small amounts but these fees add up.”
Justin Taillon – Professor and Department Head, Hospitality & Tourism Management, Highline College
Will the current economic downturn affect traveling this summer?
“Absolutely travel will be affected by the economy! With the rising costs of gas, food, and utilities, a family vacation may or may not even happen this year. The best advice is to be creative and try some new adventures. Do not let where others go or what’s trending affect your choices and budget. Visit national and state parks, historical museums, and educational locations along with local hospitality fare, and support regional attractions; you may be pleasantly surprised!”
Mary Jo Ross, Ph.D., CSEP, CPCE – Associate Professor, Slippery Rock University
“While there is still so much pent-up demand for travel due to the pandemic curtailing our vacations over the last few years, an economic downturn could likely affect travel this summer. Those who have already planned their travel will probably still take the trip but may cut down their daily spending, spend less on accommodations, or perhaps end their trip a day or two earlier to reduce the overall cost of a trip. For those who are not planning travel due to economic factors, a great option is to be a tourist in your community. Much like we saw in the financial crisis of the late 2000’s the staycation provides an alternative to a costly vacation. Head to your local visitor’s center and explore what your area has to offer instead.”
Ara Pachmayer, Ph.D. – Associate Professor, Cal Poly Humboldt

Destinations for Solo Travelers this Summer

April 28, 2023

Vienna, Austria is an ideal destination for culture seekers traveling solo © Karen Rubin/

Solo travel is one of the top trends for summer vacations. Google searches for “solo travel for women” and “solo cruises” have doubled this year in the U.S. along with a 120% jump in searches for “solo travel destinations.” As temperatures rise and getaways are on everyone’s mind, see why these popular destinations are so appealing to solo travelers:

Barbados – This Caribbean island boasts all-inclusive resorts and volun-tourism opportunities perfect for a solo traveler. Club Barbados is a luxurious oceanfront resort with diverse dining options, watersports, tour accommodations and land activities. The all-inclusive Sugar Cane Club rests on the island’s west coast. While visiting Barbados, solo travelers can also embark on tours for one that highlight the rich culture, friendly locals and many historic sites. There are also opportunities to enjoy an immersive experience through volun-tourism opportunities. The Barbados Sea Turtle Project invites visitors to assist with transporting baby turtles to the shore while also helping to protect their nesting sites from predators. Other opportunities to do good include planting trees, beach and sea floor clean-ups, and packing school supplies to donate to Barbados’ students. More volunteer opportunities can be found here.

U.S. Virgin Islands – A solo escape to the Caribbean? The U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) is the perfect destination for a self-discovery vacation. American citizens do not need a passport, making it easy to experience. Solo travelers will want to book at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, a family-owned beach resort nestled in a picturesque bay with views of the Caribbean Sea in St Thomas and offers a friendly, personalized service. Two Sandals is another amazing spot, with stunning ocean-view balconies. Spend days on the white sand beaches or hitting any of the 20 hiking trails. I look forward to this new season offering unique experiences that allow for families and individuals of all abilities to enjoy our historic Canal system.”

New York Power Authority Interim President & CEO Justin E. Driscoll said, “The ‘On the Canals’ excursions program is an innovative use for New York’s Canal system, and one that has enticed travelers to visit and experience it for what it really is – scenic water and trailways steeped in rich history offering boundless opportunities for exploration and recreation. I am grateful to Governor Hochul for continuing to invest in our canals and I am certain that these excursions will continue to make New York’s Canal system a force for economic growth and recreation.”

New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “I am incredibly proud to join Governor Hochul and our colleagues at the New York Power Authority as we officially launch this year’s ‘On the Canals’ summer excursions with new offerings that make this program more accessible than ever. Our Canal system is a fundamental part of our state’s history and should be enjoyed to its fullest capacity by all New Yorkers and visitors who come looking for education, adventure, and fun, and I encourage everyone of all ages and skill levels to spend their summer experiencing New York’s most iconic waterways and trails ‘On the Canals.'”

Those interested in learning more about the “On the Canals” program or to sign-up for an excursion may do so by visiting the “On the Canals” website. Additional excursions will be launched throughout the year.

Initially piloted in the summer of 2020 as “NY Canal Staycations,” the “On the Canals” program has expanded as a year-round recreation initiative in New York State after participation nearly tripled in 2021.

“On the Canals” is funded through the New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation’s Reimagine the Canals initiative – a $300 million effort to revitalize the Canal system as a tourism and recreation destination while simultaneously boosting economic development and improving the resiliency of canalside communities.

The New York State Canal system, which provides unique and unparalleled experiences, officially opened in May this year for its 198th consecutive season of navigation.
