Love ACKtually: Top Reasons to Visit Nantucket This Summer

Located 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Nantucket is the former whaling capital of the world. Today, it’s home to 82 miles of public beaches, untouched moors and dunes, dramatic cliffs, and quiet harbors. With the summer travel season in full swing, there will never be a better time to escape to the “Grey Lady.”

What’s New on Nantucket: Nantucket is booming and its hydrangeas are blooming. New restaurants complement island favorites, and accommodations are opening due to demand. Despite the development, conservation remains king, with almost half the island under preservation. As the island carefully expands its offerings, here’s a look at what is new this season.

The Wauwinet, located on the northeast end of the island and sandwiched between two private beaches, re-opened in April following a multi-million-dollar restoration of its 32 guest rooms and cottages. As part of the renovation, the hotel collaborated with Serena & Lily to re-design the property’s three-bedroom Anchorage House. The interior now features the brand’s signature coastal prints and beachy furniture.

New dining options on the island include Pizzeria Gemelle, which offers Neapolitan pies using ingredients from the nearby Bartlett Farm; Or The Whale, an American bistro whose name was inspired by Herman Melville’s Moby Dick; and Saltbox Tavern & Table, which serves comfort food favorites like fried pickles and truffle honey risotto.  Also new to the island is Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop MRKT pop-up. The general store/beach house hybrid offers curated summer items like Sperry boat shoes, Alo Yoga activewear, and Vintner’s Daughter Skincare. In other retail news, Veronica Beard partnered with local Perch boutique to feature their signature jackets; and ACK4170’s first brick and mortar outpost has goods like tote bags printed with hand-drawn Nantucket maps from the early 1900s.

JetBlue has new direct flights to Nantucket from LaGuardia Airport in New York City and Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York. The service began last month. The new routes supplement existing service to Nantucket from JFK, Boston, and Washington D.C. Southern Airways Express has also launched service from three New England-based airports: Norwood, Massachusetts; New Haven, Connecticut; and Warwick, Rhode Island.

“Pet Set” to ACK: The Woof Cottages at Nantucket Boat Basin are designed especially for guests traveling with pets. Pups are welcomed with Draper Canine beds, a basket of treats and toys, food and water bowls, dog-walking services, and personalized pet tags. Woodstock Inn & Resort Invites Visitors to “Get Dirty” with New Programming at the Kelly Way Gardens This Summer

WOODSTOCK, VT – The Woodstock Inn & Resort grows its garden and culinary programming at the Kelly Way Gardens and Red Barns with a variety of new hands-on classes, events, dining experiences, and Instagrammable creations.

This year Master Gardener Benjamin Pauly expands the garden’s “gourdwalk” to 135 feet long and nine feet high. The trellis archway, covered in 17 different varieties of hanging gourds and vines offers an emerald oasis for garden guests to stroll through, relax in the shade, or capture photos and videos. In addition, fairies will take up residence at the Kelly Way Gardens this summer in whimsical houses hand-crafted from repurposed gourds. Children can visit the fairies’ homes, make a wish and leave a note behind.

Another photogenic creation is the sunflower house at Billings Farm & Museum. In August and September thousands of blooming sunflowers will be crafted into a series of five rooms and connecting hallways for visitors to explore and take one-of-a-kind pictures.

Certified organic by the Vermont Organic Farmers Association, the three acre garden will boast 385 varieties of produce including 55 varieties of tomatoes, 57 types of pumpkins, 75 berries and orchard plantings, 40 herbs and edible flowers, a mushroom glen, annual and perennial flowers, honey bees and hops. New this year will be hardy kiwis, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupes.

The Kelly Way Gardens are open to the public seasonally Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8 am to 4 pm. A full roster of activities have been planned which are complimentary for Inn guests, $5 for visitors (except where noted) and no reservations are needed.

 Master Gardener Benjamin Pauly and Executive Chef Rhys Lewis work in tandem during the weekly Red Barns Dinner Series celebrating the Kelly Way Gardens’ seasonal harvest paired with the local artistry of Vermont’s cheese makers, farmers, bee keepers, and dairymen. Housed in refurbished 19th century red barns, the 11,000 square foot kitchen studio is fully equipped for culinary demonstrations and dining events. Elements of the kitchen studio and adjacent 900 square foot garden studio have been crafted from reclaimed products. Countertops throughout the spaces are repurposed, some from former bowling alley lanes; the maple dining tables in the kitchen studio and white pine tables in the garden studio are made from trees ethically harvested at the nearby Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park; the kitchen studio’s butternut backsplash was created from a tree harvested on the resort property. Salvaged light fixtures include chandeliers in the kitchen studio, wall and ceiling lights throughout, and outdoor lampposts in the garden.

Nearby Billings Farm & Museum recently launched the Learning Kitchen where Resort Chef Ryan Beaudoin of the Woodstock Inn & Resort will host culinary classes for Inn guests. Featuring simple yet inventive dishes made with the Kelly Way Gardens’ bounty and Billings Farm specialty dairy products, the demonstration classes take place on Wednesdays through August 28 from 10:30am-12:30pm for $45 per person. On Thursdays through August 22 at 10:30am-12:30pm Chef Ryan leads an interactive, hands-on cooking experience at the Learning Kitchen teaching straightforward recipes also with produce from Kelly Way Gardens and Billings Farm fresh dairy products. The class is $75 per person. Entry to the Billings Farm & Museum is free to guests of the Woodstock Inn & Resort.

Summer at Alta, Utah’s Wildcat Basecamp Will Be Different This year

Summer in Alta, Utah

Summer at Alta will look a bit differently this year. First, there is plentiful snow covering many beloved hiking trails and second, construction will close the Albion parking lot and Sunnyside lift this summer. The summer road into the Albion Basin is scheduled to open July 16th (conditions permitting). With limited parking in the Albion Basin, an amenity fee per vehicle will be charged. Your best bet for free parking and base area trailhead access can be found at the Wildcat base or as we call it, Wildcat Basecamp.

Wildcat Basecamp Provisions

Wildcat Basecamp provides all the essentials snacks, beverages, restrooms, parking and more. Enjoy food and beverages at the Wildcat Basecamp concession area after hiking among the wildflowers. The concession stand will be open from June 29th through September 2nd, weekdays 10-7 pm and on holidays/weekends 8:30-7 pm.

Hiking

Beginning July 20th hikers can load a shuttle from Wildcat Basecamp for a fee of $5 per person into Albion Basin. The shuttle will operate on weekends and holidays July 20th through September 2nd from 9-6 pm. We highly encourage hikers to start from Wildcat Basecamp to get the full breath Alta has to offer and due to limited parking in the basin. There will be knowledgeable mountain hosts to answer questions at the Wildcat Basecamp on weekends and holidays. All hikers are encouraged to stay on designated trails.

Lunch and Brunch

Let Alta Lodge do the cooking on the weekend. Savor, Saturday lunch from 12-2 pm or Sunday Brunch served from 9:30-2 pm. Check out the new Snowpine Lodge restaurant Swen’s, open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8-2 pm or the Gulch Pub is open daily from 3-9 pm.

Stewardship Programs

Sandy Pines Camping Resort in Kennebunkport Opens Second Season with New Glamping Accommodations, Programming

Kennebunkport, ME Sandy Pines Campground opens May 11, 2018 for its second season with a roster of curated new experiences, custom designed glamping accommodations and engaging programming benefiting every level and style of camper – from RVers and traditional tent campers to glampers.

“When guests come to Sandy Pines, we aim to immerse them in the best of Maine – its natural beauty, nostalgic charm, a feeling of community – and set the stage for making new memories each time they visit,” said co-founder and hotelier Tim Harrington. “During our first season, we took note of what campers enjoyed most and built on those types of offerings for 2018.”

Sandy Pines opened in June 2017 with a plethora of resort-level amenities, including a rustic Grand Lodge, General Store stocked with local Maine provisions and a dedicated s’mores section, heated saltwater pool, Kids’ Kamp, lawn games and more.

For Summer 2018, campers can look forward to weekly entertainment like TBT Movie Nights by the Pool, screening throwback flicks served with popcorn and ice cream bars; Saturday Night Fever, where campers can convene for live music, a burger bash and cocktails – mixers provided, BYOB; and Sundae Funday ice cream buffet complete with toppings bar.

The Snack Bar will offer tasty breakfast options such as freshly baked pastries and breakfast burritos, plus grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, perfect for easy outdoor dining. A Maine visit isn’t complete without lobster and Sandy Pines campers can pre-order lobster dinners for delivery, which include steamed lobster, butter, sides, dessert and utensils. 

Grownups don’t get all the fun! New Kids’ Kamp activities will keep tiny tykes busy crafting dreamcatchers, learning to build teepee shelters, tie-dying keepsake t-shirts and more. Parents can loosen the leash on their free-roaming pre-teens but ensure they’re well-fed with Camper Cash, redeemable for ice cream, the snack bar or other in-park activities.

Glamping

Nature enthusiasts angling for elevated accommodations can choose from several new options available for nightly rental, beginning late June 2018. 

This season, Sandy Pines will unveil 12 Camp Carriages, akin to stylish cottages on wheels. These retreats are uniquely decorated by Kennebunkport designer Krista Stokes and are outfitted with king-size beds, A/C, exterior window shutters, fire pits and seating areas.  Krista also collaborated on designing 12 Hideaway Huts, wooden A-frames that are sleek and modern, yet rustic. The cozy structures feature full-size beds and lighting with outdoor seating areas and fire pits.

Lastly, Sandy Pines will add four more of their popular safari-style Glamp Tents, bringing the total to 16 professionally decorated accommodations, each with unique elements like antiques, four-post beds, chandeliers and more. Kennebunkport’s Louise Hurlbutt designed the four new tents, named Tradewinds, Robin’s Nest, Elements and Under the Stars.

Themed Weekends

Sandy Pines will expand their experiential park programming with new themed weekends. The first is Vintage Camping Weekend, June 15-17 during Father’s Day weekend, where owners of restored, DIY and unique campers will converge to swap stories, play games, enjoy live music, BBQ and the Great Outdoors. All park guests are invited to get in on the fun and tour the vintage campers.

To celebrate the Fall Equinox on September 22, Sandy Pines will host a family-focused “Great Maine Camp Out.” Campers of all ages are invited to spend the night, take an astronomy class, learn techniques for campfire cooking, listen to fireside storytelling by local authors and more.

Located minutes from Goose Rocks Beach in charming Kennebunkport, Sandy Pines Campground provides an experience that is authentically Maine, embodying the best of the Pine Tree State’s coast – natural beauty, salty breezes and a small-town ambiance. Vail Resorts to Launch On-Mountain Epic Discovery Summer Adventures

VAIL, Colo. – Want to soar like an eagle? Travel through the forest canopy like a squirrel? Find out if you’re as strong as a bear? See the world through the eyes of a trout? This summer, Vail Resorts is introducing Epic Discovery at Vail Mountain in Colorado and Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe. Epic Discovery provides an on-mountain summer experience, immersing guests in activities which provide big-time thrills, allow them to challenge themselves physically, guide them to explore and better understand their natural surroundings, and ultimately create lifelong memories.

“Epic Discovery will provide an avenue for our summer guests to experience our alpine settings in a new, immersed way, similar to what our ski and snowboard guests experience in the winter,” said Chris Jarnot, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Vail Mountain. “Vail Resorts, along with our partners at the U.S. Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy, envisions Epic Discovery as a catalyst for helping to foster a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors among a diverse audience of summer visitors to the mountains.””

This new comprehensive on-mountain summer adventure will feature components such as zip lines, canopy tours, alpine coasters, wildlife trail exploration, and interactive, “learn-through-play”  activities, which will debut at Vail and Heavenly in June and at Breckenridge in 2017.

“Epic Discovery offers families the opportunity to learn through play together in the national forest,”” Jarnot continued. “For kids, it will be the ultimate playground in an alpine setting.””

Vail Mountain’s Epic Discovery proposal received final approval from the U.S. Forest Service in October 2014, and the resort began construction the following summer. Vail’s existing Adventure Ridge has already undergone enhancements with the addition of two rope challenge courses, summer tubing, a four-line Zip Flyer, as well as a kids’ challenge course and kids’  zip line.

In June, Vail Mountain, located on the White River National Forest, will debut these Epic Discovery experiences:

  • Game Creek Canopy Tour: The ultimate outdoor experience, this guided tour will immerse guests in the forest habitat with an array of zip lines and aerial bridges as high as 300 feet above the valley floor. Guests will learn about the mountain environment from interpretive guides while working their way through the course.
  • Forest Flyer: This gravity-based alpine coaster allows guests on individual sleds to descend on a raised track through the forest while giving riders full control of their speed.
  • Expanded Trail System: A wildlife exploration trail, featuring mountain flora and fauna and a series of installations that each resembles a different animal ability, such as vision, stride, agility and strength. Vail has partnered with The Nature Conservancy, the USFS and Walking Mountains Science Center to bring interpretive elements to the Epic Discovery experiences and will be contributing one percent of all summer lift ticket and activity revenue to The Nature Conservancy for forest restoration projects.

Heavenly’s Epic Discovery project, which received final approval on May 14, 2015, has already seen the implementation of several new on-mountain adventures, including a permanent rock climbing wall and kids ropes course and zip line, all located at Adventure Peak at the top of the Heavenly Gondola.

Opening in June, Heavenly’s Epic Discovery will feature:

  • Canopy Tour: Set amongst the pines surrounding the mid-station observation deck of Heavenly’s Gondola, this guided tour will immerse guests in the forest habitat with an array of zip lines and aerial bridges featuring an unfiltered view of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains.
  • Alpine Coaster: This gravity-based alpine coaster allows guests on individual sleds to descend on a raised track through the forest and natural rock formations, with incredible scenic views of Lake Tahoe. Located near the existing summer tubing hill, the alpine coaster will utilize gravity for the descent while giving riders full control of their speed.

Epic Discovery: A Summer Mountain Adventure

Summer in the mountains is taking on a whole new feel thanks to legislation passed in 2011, the Ski Area Recreational Opportunity Enhancement Act, and Vail Resorts is the first in the ski industry to submit and implement a comprehensive new summer activities plan to the U.S. Forest Service. Vail Resorts’ Epic Discovery program encourages “learn through play,” promoting environmental education and forest stewardship with numerous fun experiential activities across three different mountain resorts, Vail Mountain, Breckenridge and Heavenly. The Epic Discovery experience will incorporate extensive environmental and interpretive programming that offers guests a unique opportunity to try new outdoor activities, challenge themselves physically, discover an appreciation for nature and create lasting family memories. Each of these new activities will capitalize on the existing summer visitation at each resort and leverage existing infrastructure, creating the opportunity for high-impact and high-return projects. Through a partnership with The Nature Conservancy, a leading conservation non-profit organization, Epic Discovery will complement the eco-discovery experiences across the mountain with scientific content. Subsequently, Vail Resorts will utilize its new “1% For The Forest” program as a means to contribute one percent of all summer lift ticket and activity revenue to The Nature Conservancy for forest restoration projects on national forest lands.

The Lord Baltimore Hotel, one of the crowning architectural jewels of Baltimore, Md. when it was built in 1928, has new inclusive guest packages to enrich guest experiences during their visits to Charm City. The historic hotel has partnered with the most popular cultural venues in the area, including the National Aquarium, the Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art, to provide affordable outings to engage visitors in the rich culture that is present throughout the city.

Seasonal offers and inclusive packages are the latest expansion to the recently restored and renovated hotel. The grand French Renaissance landmark, included on the National Register of Historic Places and regarded as a member of Historic Hotels of America, underwent a complete aesthetic transformation to bring the hotel back to life and officially re-opened in March of this year.

Lord Baltimore Hotel guests are guaranteed a holistic cultural experience with the “See It All” package containing two Water Taxi passes that will cruise them across the iconic Baltimore Harbor. The experience continues with Harbor Passes, which include admission to plunge under the sea at the National Aquarium, discover the scientific phenomena that empower our planet at the Maryland Science Center and receive a panoramic view of the city from the 405-foot Top of the World Observation Level. Baseball fans will have the option to check out one of Baltimore’s favorite pastimes at Sports Legends at Camden Yards, while guests with children can find amusement at the hands-on Port Discovery Children’s Museum.

Visitors with a curiosity to uncover the city’s rich past can select the “History, Past & Present” package that celebrates the War of 1812*. This package includes two tickets on the Water Taxi for an excursion to Ft. McHenry, where Maryland-native Francis Scott Key authored the Star-Spangled Banner – celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. The historical experience continues with two tickets to the Babe Ruth Museum featuring their “O” Say Can You See: The Star Spangled Banner in Sports exhibit, and two 1812 Bicentennial Passport/Discount books.
