Photographers Have Opportunity for Face-to-Face Portfolio Reviews at PhotoPlus Expo in NYC

October 9, 2014
The Official Portfolio Review Program at PhotoPlus Explo at the Javits Convention Center in New York, Oct. 29-Nov. 1, is the largest and most cost-effective way for photographers to gain access to many of the world’s leading industry influencers.

The Official Portfolio Review Program at PhotoPlus Explo at the Javits Convention Center in New York, Oct. 29-Nov. 1, is the largest and most cost-effective way for photographers to gain access to many of the world’s leading industry influencers.

One of the most effective ways to advance your career as a photographer is to have world class pros review your existing portfolio and offer sound advice for building a stronger portfolio to share with prospective customers and clients.

The Official Portfolio Review Program at PhotoPlus Expo at the Javits Convention Center in New York, Oct. 29-Nov. 1, is the largest and most cost-effective way for photographers to gain access to many of the world’s leading industry influencers.  Outside of PhotoPlus Expo, access to these industry influencers is virtually impossible and cost prohibitive.  This year, the portfolio review program has been expanded to include video to meet the growing demands of the industry – photographers, videographers and filmmakers will be able to present and receive feedback on short films to demo reels.

At PhotoPlus Expo, presented by the Palm Springs Photo Festival, photographers (and videographers) will be able to sit down with dozens of top picture editors, art buyers, gallery owners, and art directors to have their portfolios reviewed and have one-on-one discussions about how to take their careers to the next level.

On Wednesday, October 29, the Official Portfolio Review Program will host a special Beginning Pro Day, exclusively for photographers launching their careers and those seeking portfolio consultations.  Reviewers will help these photographers determine proper image selection, sequencing, and offer overall career advice and counseling.  This is an opportunity for attendees embarking on careers in photography and video to receive one-on-one advice from some of the most successful and influential professionals in the business.

Portfolio reviews for Emerging Pros and seasoned Professionals will be available from Thursday, October 30 through Saturday, November 1.

The Official Portfolio Review Program is essentially a job fair for photographers featuring more than 175 influential professionals, and unlike other review programs, participants will be able to select and prioritize the reviewers who will review and critique their work. Last year, more than 1,600 portfolios were reviewed at PhotoPlus Expo and that figure is expected to increase this year due to the addition of the Beginning Pro program scheduled on Wednesday, October 29.

“This is an exclusive opportunity to meet one-on-one with experienced industry professionals to present your work and receive valuable feedback from people who hire, exhibit or publish photographers on behalf of their respective agencies, galleries, imprints and magazines,” explains Lauren Wendle, vice president/publisher of PDN and the Photo Group.  “The program is an extremely cost-effective way to present work in an influential and impactful way, especially when considering the cost of airfare and hotels, assuming you could gain access to these creatives at all.  PhotoPlus is all about learning, education, and access to industry leaders – it really doesn’t get any more personal than this.”

Every approved registrant for the Official Portfolio Review Program will also receive free admission to PhotoPlus Expo, which includes the opportunity to try and compare the latest gear from hundreds of exhibitors and the ability to register to attend any of the 80-plus seminars and panel discussions scheduled throughout the show.

Photographers can see the complete list of reviewers and can register online to participate in five portfolio reviews. The cost for Beginning Pros is $250 and the cost for Emerging Pro and Professional Photographers is $275. Attendees who book 10 or more reviews will receive a 10 percent discount.

For more than 30 years, PhotoPlus Expo has been the meeting place for photographers, educators, enthusiasts, and anyone with a passion for photography and filmmaking.  It has been recognized as much for its keynote presentations as for its extensive seminar schedule and trade show, and this year’s keynote lineup will complement some of the latest topics and issues in photojournalism, photography and creative inspiration. The keynote presentations will be held each day during the PhotoPlus Expo from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to register now because keynote seating is limited and each session is expected to sell out.  Keynote admission is free to Photo Group members (PDN, PhotoServe.com and WPPI); included with the purchase of any PhotoPlus conference pass or $15 each for non-members and $10 each for high school or college students or educators if purchased online by October 28.  VIP Expo Passes include admission and priority seating at all keynotes as well as the chance to network with the speakers at the Halloween Bash on October 31 at the 230 Fifth rooftop bar and penthouse lounge.

Thursday, October 30 (12:30 – 1:30 p.m.)

“A Day Without News” – Panel Discussion

Imagine looking at the New York Times only to find blank pages without news or photographs.  Each day photojournalists bring the good, the bad and the ugly to the safety and comfort of our kitchens, where we read the news without giving thought to the dangers they endure.

In the past 20 years, more than 1,000 journalists have lost their lives in conflict zones and these numbers are escalating with worrying frequency. Once considered neutral observers, journalists are now being targeted, kidnapped, held for ransom and killed. In 2013, following the deaths of their friends and colleagues, the legendary correspondent Marie Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik, the founders of A Day Without News, launched a campaign to raise awareness about the realities faced by journalists all over the world.

This presentation asks the question, “will there soon be a day when it is simply too dangerous for journalists to work in global conflict zones?” Join Aidan Sullivan VP of Getty Images Photo Assignments, Santiago Lyon Director of Photography at AP, and photojournalists Lynsey Addario, Ron Haviv, and Antonio Bolfo for firsthand insights about how the increase in journalist targeting has affected each panelist, their colleagues, and their changing role in the world today. This is a rare opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of these issues, to engage with these heroes, and to learn how you can help bring about changes like stronger legislation and increased security for news journalists.

Friday, October 31 (12:30 – 1:30 p.m.)

Martin Parr has been described as a chronicler of our age.  A British documentarian and avid street photographer, his projects offer a penetrating and satirical view of the world we live in and how we present ourselves, from what we value most to the food we eat. Using his signature style of high-saturation color at close range and often using macro lenses and ring flash, Parr enables us to see the familiar in a completely new way. In his PhotoPlus keynote, Parr will share and discuss images from his long career as a photographer, as well as his more recent work as an editor, curator, and passionate chronicler of photo books.

Saturday, November 1 (12:30 – 1:30 p.m.)

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer, Ben Folds, first found success with Ben Folds Five and has gone on to a very successful solo career, writing, recording, and performing pop hits, as well as a recent new concerto for piano and orchestra.

In addition to his self-described love of making music “for humans,” Folds is also an avid photographer. During his keynote session, Folds will share his love of photography and discuss its central place at the core of his overall creative being.  I tend to photograph things on the upbeat rather than the downbeat,” he says. “In that way, it’s possible that my music captures notes and my photographs capture the rest. Images always speak for themselves.”

Admission to all three keynotes is included with the purchase of any 2014 PhotoPlus Expo Full Conference Pass, One-Day Pass, and the VIP Expo Pass.  Each of the above passes also includes:

  • A three-day pass to PhotoPlus Expo to see the latest products from over 225 exhibitors
  • Admission to the panel discussion by leading tech experts, entitled “How Technology is Leading the Storytelling Revolution” on October 29 from 5 to 6 p.m.
  • Entry into Test Drive: New Product Preview + Networking, a pre-show kickoff event on October 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Designed for professionals in the photographic and imaging industries, PhotoPlus Expo showcases the latest advances in photography, digital imaging and filmmaking. Held annually at the Javits Convention Center, attendees have the opportunity to explore an inspiring array of photography and imaging products and services – everything from image capture and color management to retouching and storage – all from the industry’s leading manufacturers.  The show also offers Seminars and intimate Master Classes taught by world-renowned experts that focus on cutting-edge innovations and techniques

PhotoPlus Expo Oct. 24-26 in NYC Brings World Class Photographers Who Share Expertise

Astronaut Donald Petit, Celebrity Shooter (and Musician) Mark Seliger, and Industry Icon Rick Smolan are among those who will share their knowledge and experience  with PhotoPlus Expo attendees October 24-26, 2013 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.

For 30 years PhotoPlus Expo has brought the world’s most renowned and successful photographers, educators, and leaders in imaging to the annual show that has come to be known as the “largest photography classroom in America.”  Over the years, the expos’ daily keynote presentations have taken center stage and have become the cornerstone of this annual photography event.  This year’s lineup of keynote speakers certainly brings new meaning to the phrase, “star power.”  The lunchtime keynote presentations will be held each day during PhotoPlus Expo from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to register now as keynote seating is limited and each is expected to sell out.

NASA Astronaut Donald Pettit, PH.D., a three-time space explorer, will open the star-studded series of daily keynote presentations with “An Astronaut’s Guide to Photography in Space” on Thursday, October 24.  Dr. Pettit was the first astronaut in the history of space exploration to successfully enter a commercially built and operated spacecraft docked in the International Space Station (ISS) in orbit.  During his time in space, Pettit amassed an extraordinary portfolio of long-exposure outer space photos he calls “star trails,” shot some 240 miles up in space while logging more than 370 days orbiting Earth and over 13 EVA (spacewalking) hours.

With more than 100 Rolling Stone covers to his credit, Mark Seliger certainly doesn’t need an introduction.  But most might be surprised to know that Seliger is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and frontman for the popular country band, Rusty Truck.  On Friday, October 25, Seliger’s keynote presentation will combine his obvious visual talent with those as a musician when Rusty Truck performs live as music videos produced by the visual side of Seliger’s creative mind quietly perform in the background.

Rick Smolan’s ability to produce projects that live for generations is easily supported by his “Day in the Life” book series.  National Geographic asked Smolan to document Robyn Davidson’s solo journey across 1,700 miles of Australia’s Gibson Desert.  Their story, now a major motion picture titled, TRACKS, tells the story of their amazing journey. Produced by the Oscar-winning team of “The King’s Speech,” the movie stars Mia Wasikowska (star of “Stoker”, “Lawless”, “The Kids are Alright” and “Alice in Wonderland” with Johnny Depp). Smolan will be portrayed by Adam Driver, from the hit TV series “Girls”, another rising star who appeared in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” and in “Frances Ha”.  In his PhotoPlus Expo keynote, Smolan will share clips from the upcoming movie and never before seen images from his adventure.

“This year’s keynote speakers represent true star power and reflect the incredible talent of photographers who have shared their knowledge and experience with PhotoPlus Expo attendees for the past 30 years,” explains Lauren Wendle, vice president and publisher, The Photo Group.  “Each keynote presenter this year is a master photographer, an explorer and a star in their own right.  Whether it’s exploring space, the world we live in, or exploring personal talents beyond the obvious, they each provide inspiration and encouragement for attendees to question and pursue what’s possible in their own photography and careers, and that is what makes PhotoPlus Expo so special.”

Keynote Presentation Schedule

Thursday, October 24 –12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Donald Pettit
An Astronaut’s Guide to Photography in Space
The cupola: A window with a view that provides an orbital perspective and presents a striking view of Earth and its inky surroundings. Because of this unique vantage point, the casual act of pointing a camera and snapping a few shots will produce images that can wow an audience for hours.

This presentation will delve into the Earth-known details of focus, exposure, and composition as warped to suit the extraordinary range of brightness and color in space and the cramped zero gravity environment of the cupola.

Friday, October 25 — 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Mark Seliger
In this two-part, one-hour presentation, Mark Seliger will discuss the evolution of his editorial assignments in portraiture and fashion, and how he extends these projects into self-assignment. The second part of the presentation will illustrate his personal journey in songwriting and the intersection of music and image making. Prior to the event, we recommend attendees download Seliger’s free companion book from the iTunes Store.

Saturday, October 26 — 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Rick Smolan
TRACKS: Alone Across the Outback, From the Cover of National Geographic to the Silver Screen
TRACKS, a new motion picture from the Academy Award-winning producers of “The King’s Speech,” is the astounding story of a 27-year-old Australian woman who set off to cross the desolate outback, accompanied by only four camels and a dog. At the age of 28, National Geographic magazine gave photojournalist Rick Smolan the assignment of a lifetime; to document Robyn Davidson’s solitary 1,700 mile journey across Australia’s Gibson desert.  This is a story that went on to become one of the most memorable in National Geographic’s 100-year history, and one of the most talked about motion pictures at the Sundance, Venice and Telluride Film Festivals.

Keynote tickets may be purchased for $15 each ($10 each for students) online by Oct. 22 or onsite for $20 each, before they sell out.

Admission to all 3 keynotes is included with the purchase of any 2013 PhotoPlus Expo Seminar Pass, WPPI University Pass or VIP Expo Pass, which also includes;

•    A 3-day pass to PhotoPlus Expo – see the latest products from over 300 exhibitors
•    Panel Discussion by Leading Tech Experts: “20/20 Vision: What Will Photography  Look Like in the Next Decade?”  – Oct. 23 / 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
•    Test Drive: New Product Preview + Networking Event – Oct. 23 / 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
•    PhotoPlus 30th Anniversary Party BASH – Oct. 25 / 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
