Photographers at the PhotoPlus Expo get a chance to try out lighting techniques. This year’s event takes place Oct. 28-Nov. 1 at the Javits Center, New York City © 2014 Karen Rubin/news-photos-features.com

For more than 30 years, PhotoPlus Expo has been the meeting place for photographers, educators, enthusiasts, and anyone with a passion for photography and filmmaking.  It has been recognized as much for its keynote presentations as for its extensive seminar schedule and trade show, and this year’s keynote lineup will complement some of the latest topics and issues in photojournalism, photography and creative inspiration. The keynote presentations will be held each day during the PhotoPlus Expo from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to register now because keynote seating is limited and each session is expected to sell out.  Keynote admission is free to Photo Group members (PDN, PhotoServe.com and WPPI); included with the purchase of any PhotoPlus conference pass or $15 each for non-members and $10 each for high school or college students or educators if purchased online by October 28.  VIP Expo Passes include admission and priority seating at all keynotes as well as the chance to network with the speakers at the Halloween Bash on October 31 at the 230 Fifth rooftop bar and penthouse lounge.

Thursday, October 30 (12:30 – 1:30 p.m.)

“A Day Without News” – Panel Discussion

Imagine looking at the New York Times only to find blank pages without news or photographs.  Each day photojournalists bring the good, the bad and the ugly to the safety and comfort of our kitchens, where we read the news without giving thought to the dangers they endure.

In the past 20 years, more than 1,000 journalists have lost their lives in conflict zones and these numbers are escalating with worrying frequency. Once considered neutral observers, journalists are now being targeted, kidnapped, held for ransom and killed. In 2013, following the deaths of their friends and colleagues, the legendary correspondent Marie Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik, the founders of A Day Without News, launched a campaign to raise awareness about the realities faced by journalists all over the world.

This presentation asks the question, “will there soon be a day when it is simply too dangerous for journalists to work in global conflict zones?” Join Aidan Sullivan VP of Getty Images Photo Assignments, Santiago Lyon Director of Photography at AP, and photojournalists Lynsey Addario, Ron Haviv, and Antonio Bolfo for firsthand insights about how the increase in journalist targeting has affected each panelist, their colleagues, and their changing role in the world today. This is a rare opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of these issues, to engage with these heroes, and to learn how you can help bring about changes like stronger legislation and increased security for news journalists.

Friday, October 31 (12:30 – 1:30 p.m.)

Martin Parr has been described as a chronicler of our age.  A British documentarian and avid street photographer, his projects offer a penetrating and satirical view of the world we live in and how we present ourselves, from what we value most to the food we eat. Using his signature style of high-saturation color at close range and often using macro lenses and ring flash, Parr enables us to see the familiar in a completely new way. In his PhotoPlus keynote, Parr will share and discuss images from his long career as a photographer, as well as his more recent work as an editor, curator, and passionate chronicler of photo books.

Saturday, November 1 (12:30 – 1:30 p.m.)

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer, Ben Folds, first found success with Ben Folds Five and has gone on to a very successful solo career, writing, recording, and performing pop hits, as well as a recent new concerto for piano and orchestra.

In addition to his self-described love of making music “for humans,” Folds is also an avid photographer. During his keynote session, Folds will share his love of photography and discuss its central place at the core of his overall creative being.  I tend to photograph things on the upbeat rather than the downbeat,” he says. “In that way, it’s possible that my music captures notes and my photographs capture the rest. Images always speak for themselves.”

Admission to all three keynotes is included with the purchase of any 2014 PhotoPlus Expo Full Conference Pass, One-Day Pass, and the VIP Expo Pass.  Each of the above passes also includes:

  • A three-day pass to PhotoPlus Expo to see the latest products from over 225 exhibitors
  • Admission to the panel discussion by leading tech experts, entitled “How Technology is Leading the Storytelling Revolution” on October 29 from 5 to 6 p.m.
  • Entry into Test Drive: New Product Preview + Networking, a pre-show kickoff event on October 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Designed for professionals in the photographic and imaging industries, PhotoPlus Expo showcases the latest advances in photography, digital imaging and filmmaking. Held annually at the Javits Convention Center, attendees have the opportunity to explore an inspiring array of photography and imaging products and services – everything from image capture and color management to retouching and storage – all from the industry’s leading manufacturers.  The show also offers Seminars and intimate Master Classes taught by world-renowned experts that focus on cutting-edge innovations and techniques
