Mount Snow Opening for the 2012/2013 Winter Season on Thanksgiving Day

November 22, 2012

Mount Snow Resort announced today that it plans to open for the 2012/2013 winter ski and snowboard season on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, with five trails covering about 30 acres of skiable terrain serviced by three chairlifts. The southern Vermont resort has been making snow every night for the past week, taking advantage of even the shortest windows of snowmaking temperatures in an effort to get the season off to a good start.

During a time of year when many ski areas only offer open terrain at higher elevations where snowmaking conditions are better and skiers and riders must download on chairlifts to the base of the mountain, Mount Snow has been experiencing a string of temperature inversions during which the air is much colder at lower elevations than it is at the summit. Because of this weather anomaly and the high snowmaking production at lower elevations that results from it, the resort will start the season by operating two of its high speed quad chairlifts that reach roughly three-quarters of the way up the mountain but no summit access.

“We’ve seen some pretty interesting temperature patterns over the last week, or so. When the warmest temperature reading in northern New England is at the summit of Mount Washington, you know things are a little funny,” said Mount Snow’s Director of Operations, Dave Moulton. “Once we get some cold temps up top, it won’t take us long to get enough snow down to open the terrain up there.”

Mount Snow plans to operate chairlifts from 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. If snow conditions permit, the resort will move to normal midweek hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting on Monday.

Lift tickets for opening day will be $49 for adults (age 19-64), $39 for youth and seniors (age 6-18, 65+), $30 learning terrain-only (Discovery Shuttle Triple) and kids age five and under ski and ride for free.

Events for opening weekend include a Turkey Hangover Hill Climb on Friday, Torchlight Parade and Fireworks display on Saturday and grand opening celebrations for The Cupola retail shop as well as the Snow Barn nightclub. Mount Snow is First Ski Resort on Foursquare Social Networking Site

January 24, 2011

Mount Snow, Vermont, has become the first ski resort to form a partnership with foursquare social network.

Mount Snow has entered into a partnership with foursquare, becoming the first ski resort to launch a brand page and badge campaign on the popular social network.  Foursquare is a location based mobile platform makes areas easier to explore and provides deals and prizes for users “checking in” to their venues.  Foursquare guides real-world experiences by allowing users to bookmark information about venues that they want to visit. Foursquare is rolling its service out to only about 15 ski resorts, with only a few on board at the moment.

Out of all the ski resorts in North America, why start with Mount Snow?  “Because we’re awesome! (ok, and the foursquare founders are pass holders here),” said Dan Gullotti, Mount Snow Interactive Marketing Manager.  In one day 250 people followed Mount Snow, within 48 hours that number jumped to nearly 5000.

“My brother [foursquare Co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley] and I have been visiting Mount Snow for years, so we’re especially excited to see our home mountain putting so much effort behind their foursquare tips, Specials and badge promotion,” said Jonathan Crowley, Director of Business Development for foursquare. “We’re confident this partnership will give foursquare users some extra incentives to visit one of the best mountains in the east.”

On Thursday January 20th guests checking in at the main base lodge could visit the Marketing Office and receive a free Carinthia beanie.  Specials will be active in Mount Snows various venues, including food & beverage outlets, tubing, retail shops and the naturespa.

Bragging rights go to those who are able to unlock the Mount Snow badge but perhaps the biggest battle is for the right to be Mayor, which will include a major perk; a reserved parking spot!

Be sure to continually check into Mount Snow venues to unlock specials at Cuzzin’s, Station Tap Room, the Snow Barn, Backside Snowboards and more.  To friend Mount Snow on foursquare go to www.foursquare.com/mountsnow.
