NYC Bdwy League

New York, NY – Theatre Development Fund and The Broadway League are Breaking Barriers to Broadway with the launch of Theatre Access NYC, www.theatreaccess.nyc, a new website designed to assist theatergoers with disabilities in finding accessible performances of Broadway productions.

This website is a way to help theatergoers with physical disabilities or autism and other sensory sensitivities find Broadway shows with the particular type of accessibility service they require.  Theatre Access NYC is an intuitive, user-friendly show finder that allows users to filter and sort through dozens of Broadway shows based on accessibility, and provides details including dates, times and ticket availability for accessible performances.

“We are pleased to be part of Theatre Access NYC, in collaboration with Theatre Development Fund, which will bring more people with disabilities to Broadway.  Our goal for the new website is to provide all theatergoers who want to experience our shows an easy-to-navigate place where they can find extensive information in one location,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League.

“It’s at the heart of Theatre Development Fund’s mission to do what we can to make theater accessible to all who want to attend, no matter what the barrier,” said Victoria Bailey, TDF’s Executive Director. “Theatre Access NYC will make it easier for New Yorkers and visitors with these functional needs see more theater.”

“Theatre Access NYC is bringing much needed information to people with disabilities in one, accessible location and moving NYC one step closer to achieving its goal of being the most accessible city in the world,” said Victor Calise, Commissioner for the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

TDF and The Broadway League worked with their developer to conform to web accessibility standards, ensuring that all people with all disabilities are able to access the site.

Among the services listed are:

Mobility issues – wheelchair access, info on stairs/elevators in theaters, accessible restrooms, water fountains, etc;

Mild to severe hearing loss – theaters that regularly provide iCaption units (handheld closed caption units) and assistive listening devices (headphone units that amplify the sound onstage), as well as listings of upcoming specially scheduled open captioned and sign language interpreted performances;

Mild to severe vision loss – theaters that always provide D-scriptive audio devices (which provide a detailed account of all onstage activity) as well as listings for upcoming specially scheduled audio described performances); and

Autism friendly performances – upcoming scheduled autism/sensory friendly performances (creating a safe, supportive environment for an audience of families with children and adults on the autism spectrum. The shows are performed with minor adjustments to lighting and sound cues).

THEATRE DEVELOPMENT FUND (TDF) was created in the conviction that the live theatrical arts afford a unique expression of the human condition that must be sustained and nurtured. It is dedicated to developing diverse audiences for live theatre and dance, and strengthening the performing arts community in New York City. Since 1968, TDF’s programs have provided over 90 million people with access to performances at affordable prices and have returned over $2.5 billion to thousands of productions. Best known for its TKTS Discount Booths, TDF’s membership, outreach, access (including its internationally renowned Autism Theatre Initiative) and award-winning education programs — as well as its Costume Collection — have introduced thousands of people to the theater and helped make the unique experience of theater available to everyone, including students and people with disabilities. Recent TDF honors include a 2011 Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture, a 2012 Tony Honor for Excellence for its Open Doors Arts Education Program, a 2012 New York Innovative Theatre Award for its support of the off-Off Broadway community, and a 2013 Lortel Award “Outstanding Body of Work Award.” For more information about TDF, go to: www.tdf.org.

This new digital platform (think Instagram meets Buzzfeed meets Pinterest with a Broadway twist!) will offer curated engagement with Broadway content especially for families, with opportunities for users to participate in and even create content. We’re in the pilot stage now while we begin to build momentum, but it’s growing quickly,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League. “Activities including BwayZone, National High School Musical Theatre Awards, Viva Broadway concerts to bring more families through our Family First Nights program and more are part of a strategic plan to engage future audiences in theatre, whether they are in the audience, on stage or backstage.”

Through November 25, 2015, theatergoers have an opportunity to enter for a chance to win a trip for a family of four to see shows on London’s West End. Those who join the BwayZone email list through a special sweepstakes page will be entered for a chance to win the grand prize, which includes: a family of four trip to London, round-trip airfare from any major U.S. city to London via United Airlines, tickets to two West End shows (four tickets per show), and a three-night hotel stay in London’s Rosewood Hotel. In celebration of William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday on April 23, 2014, the Broadway League will host a series of joint activities with World Book Night U.S, a non-profit campaign to give printed books to light or non-readers.

World Book Night U.S. will provide free copies of the Dover edition of Shakespeare’s Sonnets to the Broadway League for use at national Family First Nights events for students and families, Kids’ Night on Broadway programs throughout the country, and will be distributed to students participating in the Broadway League’s high school internship program. These events will occur throughout the year in New York and on the Road at Broadway League member venues that are hosting Touring Broadway productions.

Family First Nights provides specially-priced theatre tickets for families, selected by local partner social service agencies, who may not otherwise be able to attend Broadway and Touring Broadway shows. Kids’ Night on Broadway, a national audience development program, is when kids ages 6 to 18 can see Broadway shows for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult. A Kids’ Night on Broadway ticket includes restaurant discounts, parking discounts, educational programs, and special events.

Additionally, copies of the sonnets will be placed on theatre seats during the April 23 matinee and/or evening performances of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Matilda The Musical, Newsies, and The Lion King. Curtain speeches and letters in the books will encourage audience members to give their book to someone who may not be a regular reader.

“Theatre is about storytelling,” Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, said. “The Broadway League devotes significant time and resources on educational programs to nurture future theatregoing audiences, so we are happy to collaborate with the organizers of World Book Night to increase awareness of a notable Broadway playwright!”

World Book Night U.S. Executive Director Carl Lennertz added, “We are thrilled to be partnering with The Broadway League and all the great work they do. Obviously, we share a love for the words and work of William Shakespeare, and The Broadway League is committed to increasing awareness of the arts as we are of reading, so this is a wonderfully natural fit. Theatre and books bring joy and light into many lives.”

Idina Menzel from Broadway’s new musical If/Then will serve as the 2014 KIDS’ NIGHT ON BROADWAY® National Ambassador, The Broadway League announced. The 18th KIDS’ NIGHT ON BROADWAY will take place Monday, February 24, 2014 to Sunday, March 2, 2014.

“When I first went to Broadway, it was a life-changing experience. There’s something magical about walking through the theatre district and seeing the marquees and the lights. Nothing compares to a live Broadway performance! As an adult, I still have that nostalgic feeling I had as a child.  It’s important that kids come to theatre because they get to see life through different characters. The arts are so important in general,” said Menzel, “and I’m so grateful that my career awards me with so many special opportunities to connect with young people. I’m honored to be the Kids’ Night on Broadway National Ambassador and extra thrilled that this year’s cause-related component is our arts-centered foundation, A Broader Way, which enables expression, empowerment, and enlightenment. As does Broadway.”

Idina Menzel made her Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winner, Rent, for which she was nominated for a Tony Awardâ and followed that with her Tony Award-winning performance in Wicked, which she subsequently brought to London’s West End. Other New York stage work includes See What I Wanna See (Public), The Wild Party (MTC), and Hair (Encores).  She will make her highly anticipated return to the Broadway stage this March in the new musical, If/Then.  Menzel’s voice can currently be heard in the hit Disney animated film, Frozen.  On film, she recreated her role of Maureen Johnson in Chris Columbus’ film version of Rent, and has appeared in movies as varied as Enchanted and Ask the Dust.  On television, Menzel recurred over multiple seasons of “Glee” and has guest-starred in numerous other shows. She starred in her own PBS special, “Barefoot at the Symphony,” with an accompanying album. Menzel recently concluded a highly successful international concert tour with a sold out performance at Carnegie Hall.  In addition to cast albums, Menzel’s prolific recording career includes solo albums: PBS Special; I Stand; Here; and Still I Can’t Be Still.

In 2010, Idina Menzel founded “A Broader Way Foundation,” a not-for-profit dedicated to offering girls from urban communities an outlet for self-expression and creativity through arts-centered programs, with an emphasis on building self-esteem, developing leadership qualities and striving for personal and social achievement. Kids’ Night on Broadway is proud to salute A Broadway Way Foundation as this year’s cause-related component. Visit ABroaderWay.org for more information.
