UPDATE: Getting to Colorado’s Ski Resorts Just Got Easier With More Flights to Telluride, Denver

October 22, 2014

Steamboat’s winter nonstop flight program will feature new nonstop service from San Francisco International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, expanded nonstop air service on the Los Angeles and Seattle routes and an additional weekend Houston flight directly into Steamboat/Hayden Airport (HDN) for the 2014/15 winter season.

This winter, new flights and expanded service from major hub airports will make Colorado Ski Country USA even more accessible to skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. New service from San Francisco (SFO) and Washington, D.C. (IAD) and expanded options from Dallas (DAL), Los Angeles (LAX) and Houston (IAH) will bring domestic and international guests directly into the heart of Colorado Ski Country more conveniently than ever before.

Whether a short drive from Denver, a direct flight from across the country, or a direct international flight from one of eight different countries, guests to Colorado resorts have easy, efficient and comfortable options available to land them at their favorite Colorado resorts.

*Updated*: Denver International Airport – The Gateway to Colorado Ski Country

Having expanded its international service with United Airlines’ nonstop flight from Tokyo in 2013, Denver International Airport (DIA) recently announced that United will commence daily service from Panama City, Panama in early December 2014. DIA is one of the busiest airports in the world, and benefits from numerous direct flights from all major cities from coast-to-coast in the US, including a brand new service from Dallas Love Field on Southwest Airlines. With the addition of flights to and from Panama City, the airport will now receive visitors directly from eight different countries – Australia, Canada, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Panama, and the United Kingdom.

From DIA, travelers can reach seven resorts in less than a two hour drive; Eldora Mountain Resort, Loveland Ski Area, Winter Park Resort, Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain, Ski Cooper and Ski Granby Ranch.

Alternatively, once they arrive at DIA, visitors can easily connect to any of Colorado’s regional resort community airports, including Alamosa, Aspen, Durango, Eagle, Gunnison-Crested Butte, Grand Junction, Telluride/Montrose, and Steamboat.

*Updated*: Direct Flights to Regional Airports

In many cases, additional flight options allow guests to fly right to a resort direct from their originating city. These regional hotbeds include nonstop flights from cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Newark, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. With eight regional airports in mountain and resort communities, direct flights can put travelers slope side in no time.

Telluride Ski Resort boasts non-stop flights from nine major U.S. hubs and 10 total metropolitan airports to its main airport, Telluride/Montrose (MTJ), and has announced a 20 percent increase in destination flights this winter.

New this year, United will begin non-stop service from San Francisco (SFO) and American/US Airways will start Phoenix (PHX) flights to Telluride (MTJ). American Airlines flights from Dallas (DFW) will see a 50% increase, including the addition of the daily 76-seat CRJ 900 with first class cabin. United’s Newark (EWR) flights will now run on Sundays in addition to the historic Saturday service.

Daily and multiple daily flights are also available to Telluride/Montrose on United from Denver (DEN), Chicago (ORD), Houston (IAH), and weekly from Los Angeles (LAX). Delta flies daily over the holidays and then weekly from Atlanta (ATL). One of the few resorts offering a low-cost carrier, Allegiant will continue to fly direct to Telluride/Montrose from LAX and Phoenix-Mesa (IWA/AZA). Several shuttle options are available from the airport, and to book, please visit www.tellurideskiresort.com or www.visittelluride.com.

For travelers headed to Aspen/Snowmass, approximately 150 direct and connecting flights fly weekly into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. From the airport, it’s only six miles to Snowmass Village and three miles to Aspen.

United Airlines provides daily direct flights to Aspen/Pitkin County Airport from Houston, along with four daily direct flights from Los Angeles and 13 daily flights from Denver on peak days. This is in addition to the airport’s four daily direct flights from Chicago/O’Hare and two daily direct flights from San Francisco, bringing United’s total frequency up to 24 daily flights in and out of Aspen/Snowmass this winter.

American Airlines utilizes CRJ-700 aircraft operated by American Eagle to provide 63 seats with nonstop service from Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles each with daily nonstop service to Aspen. In addition, from December 18 – March 29 Delta will provide service into Aspen/Pitkin County Airport from Atlanta and Minneapolis/St. Paul. Guests can find deals at www.StayAspenSnowmass.com and www.FlyAspenSnowmass.com.”

Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport services direct flights from Denver, Dallas and Houston, and Chicago/O’Hare. Through American and United Airlines’ extensive flight networks, guests can get to Crested Butte from anywhere in the world. Upon landing, shuttles are available to transport guests to resorts in the area such as Crested Butte or Monarch Mountain. Guests can also utilize rental car services from Hertz, Avis, or Budget.

United Airlines will have two nonstop round trip flights daily between Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport and Denver, while American Airlines will have one nonstop round trip flight daily between Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport with an additional second service in the peak holiday period. In addition, United Airlines will provide daily service from Houston International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. For detailed information, visit http://bit.ly/2014-15-CBMR-ski-flights.

The Durango/La Plata Airport serves as Purgatory, Wolf Creek Ski Area and Silverton’s main portal for guests who are travelling lengthy distances. American Airlines offers daily nonstop jet service from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, US Airways offers service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and Untied offers service from Denver International Airport. The San Luis Valley Regional Airport, which lies closest to Wolf Creek Ski Area, offers three nonstop flights to Denver International Airport.

New for the 2014/2015 ski and snowboard season will be Saturday nonstop service to HDN from San Francisco (SFO) and Washington-Dulles (IAD). In addition, Los Angeles (LAX) and Seattle (SEA) flights will both add an additional day of service during the winter. A new Houston (IAH) overnight flight, arriving Saturday and departing Sunday, rounds out the new offerings for the program.  The resort’s upcoming flight program provides access from 11 major airports on key U.S. carriers – Alaska, American, Delta and United Airlines. In addition to the cities mentioned above, Steamboat’s winter flight program includes service from Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and New York/Newark.

The 2014/2015 winter flight schedule provides convenient connections from more than 300 airports nationwide and worldwide. Airfares and packages are currently available for purchase through Steamboat at 1-800-922-2722 or www.steamboat.com/winter-flights.

On the Western Slope of Colorado, passengers arriving into Grand Junction Regional Airport will find themselves at Powderhorn’s lifts in under an hour.

Sunlight Resort, nestled in nearby Glenwood Springs, is accessible via Aspen/Pitkin airport as well as Eagle Airport, and Grand Junction Airport. The Sunlight Shuttle runs to and from Glenwood Springs, as does the Roaring Fork Transit Authority.

Perched on Tennessee Pass just outside of historic Leadville, Ski Cooper is a hidden Gem resort that is easy to find. Eagle Country Airport is just over an hour drive from Ski Cooper.

Norwegian celebrates its first ever flights between the U.S. and London Gatwick. the first flight between Los Angeles and London Gatwick, Norwegian’s first flight between New York’s Kennedy Airport and London and its inaugural flight from Fort Lauderdale to London. All the flights are almost full.

Norwegian Air, which has expanded service between the US and Europe, has received seven nominations in the highly acclaimed Passenger Choice Awards 2014. Norwegian is represented in more than half of the categories, including “Best in Region: Europe” and “Best Overall Passenger Experience”. The Passenger Choice Awards has become one of the industry’s most significant award programs for the airline industry.

Norwegian has previously won the Passenger Choice Awards in the categories “Best in Region: Europe” and “Best Inflight Connectivity and Communications”. This year, Norwegian has been nominated for the same categories, in addition to “Best Overall Passenger Experience”, “Best Inflight Publication”, “Best Inflight Video”, “Best Ground Experience” and “Best Single Achievement in Passenger Experience” for Norwegian’s interactive ‘Geotainment’ moving map.

“Norwegian’s decision to establish links to key cities in North America including New York and Los Angeles offers passengers real choice and affordable travel,” Stewart Wingate, CEO of London Gatwick said. “The launch also demonstrates the game-changing nature of the Dreamliner aircraft, which has less seats than older generation aircraft and therefore less reliance on transfer passengers. A two-runway Gatwick will best meet the needs of our rapidly changing aviation market, which looks very different today than it did even ten years ago. All of the signs point to Gatwick being the obvious choice for expansion.”

Flight schedule

London – Los Angeles twice a week from July 2, 2014
Norwegian operates two weekly flights between London (LGW) and Los Angeles (LAX) – on Wednesdays and Sundays. The introductory fare is £199 one way.

London – New York three times a week from July 3, 2014
Norwegian operates three weekly flights between London (LGW) and New York (JFK) – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The introductory fare is £149 one way.

London – Fort Lauderdale twice a week from July 4, 2014
Norwegian operates two weekly flights between London (LGW) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) – on Mondays and Fridays. The introductory fare is £179 one way.

Norwegian’s long-haul operations In 2013
Norwegian commenced its long-haul operation by becoming the only low-cost carrier to offer flights between Europe and the US. Norwegian will have a fleet of 17 Dreamliners, whereof seven are currently in service and one more will be delivered in 2014. The company is planning to expand its long-haul fleet with even more 787 Dreamliners.

Norwegian offers long-haul flights between the following destinations:

Routes from New York (JFK): Oslo (OSL), Stockholm (ARN), Copenhagen (CPH), Bergen (BGO) and London (LGW)

Routes from Fort Lauderdale (FLL): Oslo (OSL), Stockholm (ARN), Copenhagen (CPH) and London (LGW)

Routes from Los Angeles (LAX): Oslo (OSL), Stockholm (ARN), Copenhagen (CPH) and London (LGW)

Routes from San Francisco (OAK): Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN)

Routes from Orlando (MCO): Oslo (OSL)

Routes from Bangkok (BKK): Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN)

As for the Passenger Choice Award nominations, Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian’s Chief Commercial Officer, said, “It is a great pleasure that Norwegian’s employees’ hard work is valued so high among our passengers. To be nominated in seven categories together with many of the leading airlines of the world shows that our product, service and innovative way of thinking is highly appreciated. This is fantastic news.”

The Passenger Choice Awards has become one of the industry’s most significant award programs for the airline industry. This is because winners are chosen based on customer feedback. The Passenger Choice Awards comprise 13 individual categories and were created to give the flying public a voice in the passenger experience. The survey is open each May and June at http://www.passengerchoiceawards.com, and passengers are encouraged to vote every time they fly.

The winners will be announced at the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) Awards Ceremony on September 15, 2014, in Anaheim, California, USA.

Norwegian was recently awarded the title “Europe’s best low-cost carrier” for the second year running by the renowned SkyTrax World Airline Awards, where the passengers themselves decide the winners. Norwegian also came third in the vote for “World’s best low-cost carrier”, only beaten by AirAsia and AirAsia X.

Passenger Group Calls on Airlines to Disclose Routes That Fly Over Conflict Zones

July 31, 2014

Following the missile strike that downed MH-17 as it flew over eastern Ukraine, FlyersRights.org, the largest US-based airline passenger organization, has called on all airlines to provide passengers on international flights with detailed route maps on their web sites, so passengers can decide whether to take such flights for themselves.

“Airlines should no longer be able hide behind weak and ambiguous international regulation and confidential warnings that are not shared with passengers,” Paul Hudson, the group’s president and longtime member of the FAA and TSA advisory committees on aviation safety and security stated.

“After the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, it came to light that governments and airlines had received specific warnings of a likely bombing, but chose to hide this knowledge from passengers and flight crews, those actually at risk. Now it has been revealed that some airlines were flying over eastern Ukraine despite danger warnings that were not shared with passengers.”

“Today despite known dangers and the MH 17 shoot down, passengers are not being informed of dangerous flights over or near numerous conflict zones with missile systems capable of shooting down commercial airliners at over 30,000 feet. Such areas in addition to Ukraine and Russia, include Syria, Iraq, Egypt-Sinai, Israel-Gaza, the China Sea, North Korea, Pakistan-Afghanistan. Other conflict areas are known to have anti-aircraft weapons capable of downing low flying aircraft including Libya, Yemen, and Mali.”

“An emergency meeting of the UN International Civil Aeronautics Organization (ICAO) is being held to discuss the situation, but passenger representatives have unfortunately again been excluded from meetings between airlines and regulators, as they were previously after the mysterious disappearance of another Malaysian airliner over the Indian Ocean.”

August 14, 2013

The fall months–when weather cools down and fewer tourists abound–are perfect for visiting Italy.  Virgin Vacations  is offering two different hotel-car packages for independent travelers who want to spend a week exploring Tuscany or Italy’s Amalfi Coast in depth, at their own pace.  Priced from $429 land only (from $1,419 with air from New York), the packages include 6 nights accommodations, a 7-day manual car rental with unlimited miles, and breakfast daily.

Travelers stay at the same hotel each night, using it as a base for day excursions, so there is no need to pack and unpack daily.  Depending on individual preferences, travelers can develop their own plans, or choose from Virgin Vacations’ suggested day itineraries.  Suggested drives range from 40 – 160 miles, round trip, with estimated driving times ranging from 1 ½ to 4 hours.

Tuscany Fly & Drive: From $449 land, $1,419 air inclusive

Travelers fly to Pisa, an hour’s drive from Montecatini, where home base is the modern Tuscany Inn in the center of town. Known for its spas and its historical significance in World War II, the town is just 30 miles from Florence.  Virgin Vacations’ travelers can drive or take the train into Florence, and drive to a number of medieval towns, only 50 miles or 2 hours roundtrip.  Or, for a longer itinerary, Siena and San Gimignano are a four-hour drive, or 160 miles.
