Miami/South Beach, Florida, is the top domestic destination for 2015 for affluent travelers, according to the Virtuoso Luxe Report © 2015 Karen Rubin/news-photos-features.com

NEW YORK Virtuoso®, an international network of luxury travel agencies, has unveiled its 2015 Virtuoso Luxe Report, the results of which are based on an annual survey of its professional travel advisors. Recognized throughout the industry as an authoritative trend-predictor, the report forecasts luxury travel trends and favored destinations while offering insight into the patterns and decisions of the world’s most affluent travelers.

For the first time in five years, river cruising trumped multigenerational travel as the number one trend and Croatia secured the top spot in the “Emerging Destinations” category (the country didn’t make the “top 10” in 2014). Iceland is on the rise while Cuba, Myanmar, and Bhutan continue to be favored emerging destinations. “Adventure travel” surfaced as a dominant trend for 2015 with Costa Rica and South Africa sweeping the top two spots, respectively, proving travelers are less interested in sitting still.

The love affair with Italy continues as it reigned supreme for the “Top International Destination” as well as the favorite country for family travel and honeymoons.  France, Mexico, South Africa, and Australia follow as top international locales, respectively.

Within the U.S., New York City maintained its top spot, followed by Maui, Napa Valley/Sonoma, and Las Vegas. Miami/South Beach climbed three places to reach the “top 5,” bumping Hawaii’s Big Island to ninth place.

Honeymooners showed they are seeking romance at tried and true favorites, as well as some more exotic locales. The most popular honeymoon destinations included Italy, Maui, French Polynesia, France, and the Maldives.

Exploring new destinations, seeking authentic experiences, rest and relaxation, and spending time or reconnecting with loved ones prove to be the key motivators behind high-end travel.

Palm Beach Zoo Receives New Tiger, Now Houses Four Adult Tigers For First Time

January 3, 2015
Bumi, a four-year-old male Malayan tiger whose name means “earth” in Indonesian, joined the Palm Beach Zoo as its newest resident on December 10, 2014, bringing the number of adult tigers at the Zoo to four for the first time.

Bumi, a four-year-old male Malayan tiger whose name means “earth” in Indonesian, joined the Palm Beach Zoo as its newest resident on December 10, 2014, bringing the number of adult tigers at the Zoo to four for the first time.

For the first time ever, the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society is home to four adult tigers. The Zoo has been home to Keemasan Mata, a nine-year-old male Malayan tiger, Berapi Api, an eleven-year-old female Malayan tiger, and Angin, a four-year-old male Malayan tiger.

Bumi, a four-year-old male Malayan tiger whose name means “earth” in Indonesian, joined the Zoo as its newest resident on December 10, 2014. Bumi comes to West Palm Beach from Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. With the addition of Bumi, the Zoo is making “tiger history.”

Other milestones for the Zoo include Angin’s public debut, as well as completion of and debut of tigers in a new section of the Henry & Charlotte Kimelman Tiger Habitat, which has been under construction for nearly a year. Angin made his public debut in the Zoo’s “Tiger Falls” habitat on December 16th. The Zoo’s first Tiger Talk in the new “Tiger River” habitat section occurred on December 18th and featured Berapi Api.

Bumi’s transition from Tampa to West Palm Beach is part of a recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP) for Malayan tigers. The Zoo will house Bumi in the Zoo’s Melvin J. & Claire Levine Animal Care Complex for a minimum of 30 days, after which he will move to the Tiger Falls habitat. Officials have not yet set a date for Bumi’s public debut.

The Zoo is expanding the tiger habitat to double its original size. This expansion project is supported by the Zoo’s newest corporate sponsor, Braman Motorcars Palm Beach & Jupiter. The company’s sponsorship is helping continue the Zoo’s commitment to providing quality care and a natural habitat for its resident tigers. A grand opening ceremony for the new section of the tiger habitat will be scheduled in 2015.

“This is historic for us,” explained Nancy Nill, associate curator for the Zoo. “We are excited to welcome our fourth Malayan tiger, Bumi, and make Zoo history by keeping four adult tigers on grounds all at once. Because the tiger habitat has doubled in size, we are now able to house this many adult tigers. This is a huge step for us, and it is a good feeling to know we are expanding our role in Malayan tiger conservation.”

“Even though Bumi is not recommended to breed at the moment, by having the space to hold him, we are allowing other institutions to be able to breed,” Nill continued. “This provides a greater chance for the captive population to increase.”

The Zoo is a recognized leader in Species Survival Plan breeding programs for Malayan tigers, with three male Malayan tiger cubs, Jaya, Bunga and Penari, born at the Zoo in 2011. The wild Malayan tiger population has recently been estimated at fewer than 250 animals. Malayan tigers are the most endangered of the tiger subspecies, and they are among the smallest of the tiger species. Malayan tigers are indigenous to the Malay Peninsula, for which they are named. Initially, decline in tiger numbers was primarily due to a tremendous loss of habitat. More recently, the greater threat has been from poaching for its body parts, persecution by angry villagers, and starvation as their prey is over-harvested.

The Zoo is located at 1301 Summit Boulevard in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more information, visit www.palmbeachzoo.org.

St. Kitts is Named a ‘Travel Hotspot’ for 2015 and Ranked Among Best Caribbean Islands

St. Kitts has just received two more honors to add to its growing list of awards and recognitions for tourism excellence.  The Huffington Post has named St. Kitts & Nevis as one of the Top 15 Emerging Travel Hotspots for 2015 and Business Insider has ranked the twin-island destination at #8 on a list of the 25 Best Caribbean Islands.

St Kitts is the only Caribbean destination on The Huffington Post list (ranked at #12) and it stands among such exotic locales as Taiwan, Madagascar and Bhutan, to name a few.  The article states that emerging destinations have richness of history, culture and beauty and reward those who visit with once-in-a-lifetime experiences that consistently top travel wish lists.  Called “both the original and the newcomer in the Caribbean,” St. Kitts is noted for its new marina, YU Lounge private airport terminal and new properties “whisking the islands into a luxury category to rival the best.”  The Huffington Post is part of the prestigious AOL Network of properties with a total digital population of 79 million unique monthly visitors.

Considering its small size as compared to other islands among the top ten, St. Kitts’ ranking by Business Insider is impressive. To determine the ranking, the publication factored in each island’s average hotel room cost according to Hotels.com; the distance from New York City; the number of attractions listed on TripAdvisor; and the amount of coastline per square kilometer, which it called the beach density score.  Of note, the publication calls the twin-island destination “a hidden gem of the Caribbean” and notes that Brimstone Hill Fortress and Clay Villa Planation are breathtaking historic attractions.  Also this month, St. Kitts received the “Innovative Destination of the Year” Award in Caribbean Journal’s Caribbean Travel Awards for 2014, which honor the best in travel and tourism across the region.

Further, St. Kitts is currently ranked, with sister island Nevis, at #3 on a list of the Best Islands in the World, #3 on a list of the Best Caribbean Vacations, and #7 on a list of the Best Beach Honeymoon Destinations in the World, #8 on a list of Best Caribbean Honeymoons, and #8 on a list of the Best Affordable Caribbean Destinations by US News & World Report.  It is also currently ranked at #7 among the Hottest Places to Travel this Winter by CNN Money based on bookings received by Virtuoso, #8 on a list of the Top 10 Best Islands for a Holiday by Places To See In Your Lifetime, #14 on a list of the 50 Travel Destinations That Will Be Huge In The Next 10 Years by Business Insider and one of the Top 12 Best Caribbean Vacations on FlipKey.com, the vacation rental company of leading travel website, TripAdvisor®.  In 2012, St. Kitts was named one of “5 Caribbean Islands to Discover Now” by MSNBC.  The island was also named one of the “Top 12 Spots that should be on your list for 2012” by Caribbean Travel + Life magazine and a Top Destination for 2011 by both AOL Travel and British Airways.

Located in the northern Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, St. Kitts offers a diverse tourism product developed from the destination’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and rich history.  The island’s stunning variety of tourism attractions include hiking through the tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the island’s former sugar plantations, visiting the Caribelle Batik factory, and touring Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean. Among the more traditional vacation pastimes available are watersports, golf, shopping, tennis, dining, gaming at St. Kitts’ exclusive casino or simply relaxing on a sandy beach.  Accommodations range from intimate plantation inns to larger hotels and resorts.
