Luxury river cruise pioneers on China’s Yangtze, Victoria Cruises is replacing its regularly offered “Ghost City” shore excursion to Fengdu’s Mingshan Hill with a cultural visit to the city’s modern settlement village located on the southern bank of the river.  The development is in response to passenger feedback regarding the number of stairs one must ascend to climb Mingshan Hill (a formerly available cable car is no longer operational) as well as an overall indication of travelers’ preference for cultural activities.

“Our passengers enjoy the scenic beauty of the Three Gorges and our tributary excursions, but feedback indicates that experiences which incorporate strong cultural elements tend to score highest,” said Larry Greenman, manager of public relations and customer service for Victoria Cruises.

“The modern settlement town provides full cultural immersion as guests will have the opportunity to meet local villagers and learn about their daily activities and way of life,” said Greenman, noting that many traditional practices are still in place, offering travelers a glimpse into the past and an appreciation for some of the time-tested methods that have been central to Chinese culture for centuries.

For example, visitors will observe an old stone mill dating back to the Jin Dynasty, which is still used to grind rice, wheat, beans and other grains into flour.

Passengers will enjoy spectacular views of the Yangtze throughout the drive through town, before stopping at the home of a local farmer who will discuss his life experiences with participants.  Guests will have an opportunity to stop in town to visit some shops and the local market before returning to their cruise ship.

The Fengdu shore excursion costs $42 per person, however, Victoria Cruises recommends that passengers purchase its standard excursion package, which is available for $90 per person for departures of its Three Gorges Highlights itinerary. Royal Caribbean Is First Cruise Line to Use Google Street-View as Tool to Plan Vacation

Royal Caribbean International has become the first cruise line to launch Google Maps Business View using Google’s Street View technology onboard the world’s largest and innovative cruise ship Allure of the Seas.

By using Street View technology, Royal Caribbean International will provide consumers with an immersive and interactive experience when they are searching for a vacation.

Vacationers will be able to access the technology, a first for the cruise industry at
www.royalcaribbean.co.uk/royalview or via Google Search results, Google Maps and Google+ whether they’re using their computers, smartphones or tablets.

With just a few clicks, guests will be able to virtually walk through the various decks of Allure of the Seas including the Royal Promenade, a boulevard that runs nearly the length of the ship, flanked by restaurants, boutiques and lounges; Central Park, an outdoor park longer than a football pitch complete with over 12,000 live plants and trees; the Boardwalk, featuring a hand-crafted carousel, two rock-climbing walls and the AquaTheater, a high-dive aquatic performance venue with the deepest pool at sea; Entertainment Place, with an elaborate theatre, night club, comedy club, jazz club and ice-skating rink, which offers professionally produced ice shows; the Pool and Sports Deck featuring a zip line, twin FlowRider surf simulators, full-size basketball/sports court, nine-hole mini-golf course, 15 pools and whirlpools and 22 restaurants, and many, many more.

Over 20,000 images were taken over the course of 60 man hours and eight days to complete the virtual representation of the ship which stands taller than Nelson’s Column (165 feet) at 240 feet high and can accommodate more guests per sailing than the capacity of the Royal Albert Hall (5,544 seats).

The images were taken using a basic DSLR camera using a fisheye lens and a panoramic head resting on a tripod. This method takes twelve photographs at each point and uses high-dynamic-range imaging to ensure the best exposure for areas of different light.

See SpaceX Rocket Launch on July 14 at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is offering a “front row seat” to view the July 14 SpaceX Falcon 9 launch, which is scheduled for 9:21 a.m. The Visitor Complex will open early at 7:30 a.m. to accommodate launch viewing opportunities and provide the closest possible public viewing area: the Apollo/Saturn V Center inside Kennedy Space Center.

From the Apollo/Saturn V Center, guests will have a direct view of the Falcon 9 rocket on the launch pad and the exciting liftoff. Viewing also will be available at the Visitor Complex. Both  viewing areas feature live launch commentary and are included in daily admission. Admission to the Visitor Complex is $50 plus tax for adults and $40 plus tax for children 3-11. 

Bus boarding to the Apollo/Saturn V Center for guests will be available via the KSC Tour Buses beginning at 7:30 a.m. Guests should arrive at the Visitor Complex no later than 8:30 a.m. to allow time for transportation to the Apollo/Saturn V Center for launch viewing. 

The viewing area at the Apollo/Saturn V Center features an open lawn and bleacher section overlooking the Banana River. Food concessions and restroom facilities are available at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will lift off from Launch Pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Falcon 9 rocket will launch six second-generation ORBCOMM communications satellites to provide two-way data messaging services for global customers.

On launch day, the Visitor Complex will remain open until 7 p.m., offering a full-day space experience, with such attractions and activities as:

 

  • Space Shuttle AtlantisSM, where visitors can “be the astronaut” as they get nose to nose with a real spaceflown orbiter. Space Shuttle Atlantis is displayed as if floating in space – the only space shuttle orbiter in the world exhibited this way. Guests can also flex their astronaut abilities as they train on various simulators: take a simulated spacewalk, land the space shuttle on the shuttle landing facility, operate the robotic Canadarm or dock with the International Space Station.

 

  • KSC Up-Close Explore Tour, which gives visitors an insider’s view of the U.S. Space Program, from the launch sites of today at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to the past and future of space exploration at Kennedy Space Center. The KSC Up-Close Explore Tour includes up-close views of the massive, 525-foot-high Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) and the Shuttle Landing Facility. The tour stops in between the Kennedy Space Center launch pads for a close-up photo opportunity, in front of the VAB, and on the NASA Causeway where guests are surrounded by a panoramic view of launch pads at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

 

  • The Apollo/Saturn V Center, where dramatic multi-media shows and numerous hands-on displays provide visitors with an inspirational and exhilarating look into America’s quest for the moon. Guests relive the historic launch of Apollo 8 at the Firing Room Theater, then marvel at a monstrous 363-foot long Saturn V moon rocket, the most powerful rocket ever built and one of only three Saturn V rockets in existence. The Apollo Treasures Gallery showcases treasures from the Apollo moon missions, including Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard’s spacesuit and the Apollo 14 Command Module, Kitty Hawk.

Information on nearly four dozen county fairs as well as a number of youth fairs throughout New York State is now available on the state’s open data website, located at www.data.ny.gov.

County Fairs operate from early July through early September across New York State and present visitors with an opportunity to learn about local agriculture. They also provide countless recreational opportunities and economic benefits to local regions, from amusement park rides to games to agricultural competitions involving local farmers and small business owners.

“County fairs are a valuable tradition for communities across New York State, offering visitors a chance to experience local agriculture and entertainment while also providing a boost to regional economies,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “The State’s open data website is a great resource for New Yorkers to learn more about upcoming fairs in their area, and by highlighting these events we are helping to raise the profile of local vendors. I encourage all New Yorkers to visit a fair near them this summer, and see more of what our farmers and agricultural producers have to offer.”

“I’m a huge fan of county fairs and like millions of New Yorkers, I’ve been taking my family to our own local fair for many years,” said State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. “County fairs are an important agricultural and family tradition, and with the help of the state’s open data website it’s now easier than ever for New Yorkers to enjoy agritourism this summer.”

The current state budget provides $500,000 in reimbursements for agricultural competitions at county fairs across the state through the Department of Agriculture and Markets. The Department also operates The Great New York State Fair, located in Syracuse. This year’s Fair takes place from August 21 through September 1. The first Friday of the Fair, in line with tradition, will be designated “Law Enforcement Day.” However, this year, Friday, August 22 will also be a designated “County Fair Day.” County Fair managers and board members from all agricultural fairs from across the state will be invited to come enjoy a day at the State Fair, get a behind the scenes tour of the fairgrounds and Midway, and enjoy a couple short presentations on agriculture at the State Fair.

The State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ staff of veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians work at each county fair and the State Fair to examine animals for exhibition, including cows, pigs, sheep, goats, alpacas, and llamas. This helps to ensure that livestock return home just as healthy as when they left. Atlantic City’s Free July 4 Fireworks Spectacular Moved to Sunday, July 6 at 9:30 pm

Atlantic City’s free 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular show scheduled for this Friday will be moved to Sunday, July 6th at 9:30pm.

“While Hurricane Arthur is predicted to be far off shore Friday night, the effects on the ocean waves and the accompanying wind would hinder our fireworks show from reaching its full potential that night, and possibly create a safety hazard.  So we decided to move our fireworks show back to Sunday, July 6th at 9:30pm,” Mayor Guardian said.

“In addition, we wanted to give residents and tourists an opportunity to end their 4th of July holiday weekend with a ‘bang’.  We figured having the biggest fireworks show on the Jersey Shore on a Sunday night would be a perfect way to end the weekend.

So for those who are coming to Atlantic City this weekend, you won’t be disappointed.  The weather for both Saturday and Sunday looks terrific.  According to the Weather Channel, both Saturday and Sunday are forecasted to be completely sunny, with temperatures in the low 80s, and having a zero percent chance of rain.  It doesn’t get any better than that.  I will see you out on Atlantic City’s beaches, boardwalk, and Marina District!”

The “Sky Concerttm” was created by Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, and is presented by the Atlantic City Alliance.  Song selections were chosen “by the people” from a contest that was held by the Atlantic City Alliance.  Viewing locations will be near the Steel Pier, the Pier Shops at Caesars, and in the Marina District.  The program will begin at 9:30pm, and will include 10,000 fireworks shells and effects.  In the final 30 seconds alone, more than 1,000 shells will be fired.”

Arthur to Crash Atlantic Coast July Fourth Beach Vacations

In a case of rotten timing, AccuWeather.com is reporting thatHurricane Arthur will bring dangerous surf and a period of wet weather to many Atlantic coast beaches during the Fourth of July. In much of the Northeast, the surf will remain rough on Saturday.

Millions of people from Daytona Beach, Florida, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Cape Hatteras, North Carolina; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Wildwood, New Jersey; the Hamptons, New York; and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, will be impacted on their vacation during part of this week.

Even though the track of Arthur will take the center east of most beaches Thursday, Friday and Saturday, winds offshore will create large swells which will propagate onshore in the form of powerful waves as well as frequent, strong rip currents, Alex Sosnowski, Expert Senior Meteorologist reported for AccuWeather.com.

People are urged to obey restrictions on the beach and in the surf this weekend. Failure to do so may put not only themselves at risk but also their would-be rescuers.

“A storm is tremendous in what it can do to the shore and how dangerous it can become to swimmers,” American Lifeguard Association National Spokesperson Wyatt Werneth said. “Rip currents are strongest when the tide is coming in and the wind is onshore.”

The surf will continue to build through Friday along much of the East coast as Arthur strengthens and spins northward.

Surf conditions and seas will remain rough Saturday from the Delmarva Peninsula to New Jersey, Long Island and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

With the approach and passage of Arthur, pleasure boaters should check for the latest advisories and warnings. People should consider keeping their craft in port or remaining within the protection of the Intracoastal Waterway. The latest information on Arthur, including watches, warnings and advisories can be found on the AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center.

Gusty squalls will reach the coastal areas from the upper South Carolina coast and will spread northward over eastern North Carolina into Thursday night. Typical summertime drenching storms are possible through Friday over Florida.

The worst weather and the greatest risk of heavy rain and gusty winds in eastern North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, the Delmarva Peninsula and New Jersey will be late Thursday into Friday morning.

In the coastal areas of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, there is the risk of flooded roadways, damaging gusts and blinding downpours in squalls. The power could go out in some communities.

The combination of storm surge and tides will produce a coastal inundation of 1-3 feet with localized inundation of 4 feet from North Carolina to southeastern Virginia. Arthur may have enough impact on parts of this area for officials to prompt mandatory evacuations. Hyde County, North Carolina, officials have issued a mandatory evacuation for Hatteras Island.

Farther north from Long Island to the southern New England beaches, drenching downpours and gusty winds are forecast Thursday night into Friday night. There is a risk of flash flooding in this area with minor coastal flooding possible on portions of Long Island and Cape Cod.

The worst weather will end prior to the surf subsiding, so many will still be able to enjoy their stay at the beach safely, as long as they observe surf restrictions set forth by authorities.

Sunshine will return to South Carolina on Friday morning, and clearing will expand northeastward to eastern North Carolina, southeastern Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula Friday afternoon and evening.

During Saturday and Sunday, the sun will be shining on most areas from the Carolinas to southeastern New England with a dramatic drop in humidity.

After tropical moisture and a front bring the risk of flooding downpours and gusty thunderstorms into part of the Fourth of July, clearing is forecast in time for fireworks from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, and New York City. However, the prospect of rain has pushed the Boston show forward to Thursday night. However, thunderstorms are possible Thursday night in eastern New England.

There is a risk of typical spotty thunderstorms lingering into the evening around Florida for fireworks locations such as Walt Disney World, Accuweather’s Sosnowski reported.
