6 Prominent Long Island Authors Present Original Readings At Nassau County Museum of Art June 2

May 30, 2013

The literary arts meet the visual arts on Sunday, June 2 at 3 p.m. when Nassau County Museum of Art hosts six of Long Island’s most prominent writers in an afternoon of original readings from their works. Living, Out Loud: Writers Riff on Love, Sweat & Fears features speechwriter and essayist Robin E. Bernstein; two-time New York Emmy Award-winning essayist Iyna Bort Caruso; author and contributor to Newsday and The New York Times Claudia Cryvatz Copquin; Friars Club historian/head writer and essayist Barry Dougherty; essayist and NY Times “Modern Love” writer Paula Ganzi Licata and author and essayist Ellen Meister.

Taking a page from book readings, which usually involve an author reciting directly from a published chapter, this unique program features writers taking turns at the microphone, each reading an original essay.

“Jerry Seinfeld, who still does stand-up comedy, was recently quoted in The New York Times Magazine about the need to perform for live audiences,” said the event organizer and writer, Claudia Gryvatz Copquin.  “He said, ‘We’re craving the non-digital even more these days, the authentically human interactions,’ a statement that is extremely on-point, particularly for writers who typically work in isolation.”

Living, Out Loud: Writers Riff on Love, Sweat & Fears, at Nassau County Museum of Art on Sunday, June 2 at 3 p.m., is free with museum admission, reservations are not needed.

Nassau County Museum of Art is located at One Museum Drive (just off Northern Boulevard, Route 25A) in Roslyn Harbor. Call (516) 484-9337 for current exhibitions, events, days/times, and directions or log onto nassaumuseum.org.

Wanderlust Opens New Yoga Studio in Squaw Valley Resort

May 28, 2013

Wanderlust,  a yoga and music platform, announced it is opening a permanent facility in Lake Tahoe, California with the first yoga studio to hit the Squaw Valley Resort.

The new studio, Wanderlust Yoga Squaw Valley, is the third for Wanderlust and is an extension of the longstanding partnership between Wanderlust and Squaw Valley. Squaw was the original birthplace of the Wanderlust festival, which has now expanded to seven locations around the world. Wanderlust Yoga Squaw Valley will be the only full-time yoga studio in the valley, and is slated to open on Frist Street in the Village at Squaw Valley in late June 2013.

“Wanderlust’s core mission is to create community around yoga & mindful living,” said Wanderlust co-founder, Jeff Krasno. “The opportunity to do this on a 365-day basis in Wanderlust’s birthplace is beyond exciting. The integration of a first class yoga program with all of the outdoor activities and natural beauty of Squaw Valley will create a totally unique experience for local residents and guests.”

The studio plans to open six days a week with a variety of classes including Hatha, Vinyasa and Iyengar– ranging from beginner through high-level instructor training. Unique to Squaw, some classes will incorporate its extraordinary landscape, taking the practice outside on the mountain as well as classes that will start in the studio and wrap-up with a hike, bike ride, run, swim in Lake Tahoe or, come winter, skiing and riding on the mountain.

“The Wanderlust brand is truly among the preeminent brands in yoga with an ever growing presence well beyond yoga. We’re proud to be the origination of the now global Wanderlust Festival and this dedicated yoga studio space is a natural, exciting extension of our partnership with Wanderlust,” said Andy Wirth president and CEO of Squaw Valley. “We see this relationship coupled with our recent alliance with Ironman as one more progressive step towards Squaw Valley becoming the region’s epicenter of health, wellness athletic development and training.”

Squaw’s partnership with Wanderlust means the studio will be able to offer classes taught by some of the most recognized yoga instructors both regionally and nationally. Wanderlust and Squaw Valley will also be working together to host several two to three day retreats incorporating yoga, activities and accommodations.

In the style of the Wanderlust Festival’s vibrant fusion of yoga and music, Squaw’s new Wanderlust yoga studio will feature a full sound system to be used for some yoga sessions as well as for monthly live music in the studio. Wanderlust Yoga Squaw Valley will host its grand opening party during this summer’s Wanderlust Festival, coming to Squaw Valley July 18-21.

The Wanderlust Yoga Squaw Valley studio is the third of three Wanderlust yoga studios. The first opened in Austin in spring 2012, followed by a studio in Montreal in early 2013.

Wanderlust Festival, LLC is a producer of large-scale lifestyle festival events focusing on yoga, music and wellness. Its flagship festival, Wanderlust, was first launched in California in 2009 and has already become the largest multi-day yoga event in the world as well as a significant player in the larger US festival market. The company was founded in 2009 as a joint venture between Velour Music Group, an artist management company and event producer based in New York City, C3 Presents and Starr Hill Presents, event producers responsible for the top music festival brands in the country, including Austin City Limits Festival, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands. For more information, visit www.wanderlustfestival.com. Become a fan of Wanderlust at www.facebook.com/wanderlust and follow Wanderlust on Twitter at www.twitter.com/wanderlustfest.

Host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley is internationally renowned for legendary terrain that spans 3,600 skiable acres, six peaks and 30 chairlifts, and ranges from an expansive mountaintop beginner area to unrivaled expert steeps, trees and bowls. Off the mountain, families relax in The Village at Squaw Valley around the cozy fire pits or enjoy a host of restaurants, bars, boutiques and art galleries. Guests can stay in one of The Village at Squaw Valley’s one, two or three bedroom suites, each with a fireplace, kitchen and balcony, for the ultimate slopeside lodging experience.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows joined forces in November 2011, bringing the two ski resorts under common ownership. Skiers and riders can access 6,000 skiable acres, 43 lifts, six terrain park and 270+ trails at Squaw and Alpine Meadows on one lift ticket or season pass.

New Broadway League Website, App Offer One-Stop Shopping for Theater Tickets in NYC and Across North America

May 21, 2013

The Broadway League has launched BROADWAY.ORG, a comprehensive resource dedicated to providing theatre-goers around the world with information about all Broadway shows—both in New York and across North America © 2013 Karen Rubin/news-photos-features.com

The Broadway League has launched BROADWAY.ORG, a comprehensive resource dedicated to providing theatre-goers around the world with information about all Broadway shows—both in New York and across North America.

BROADWAY.ORG combines two previously existing sites: ilovenytheater.com, specifically targeted to Broadway shows in New York, and touringbroadway.com, which was the League’s official website for Touring Broadway productions in nearly 200 markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. With improved functionality, the new site continues to be the official source of information and provider of direct access to all things Broadway.

BROADWAY.ORG furthers the notion that Broadway is a state of mind rather than a set geographical location. Our ultimate goal is to provide a premier one-stop consumer site for show information and official ticketing links, combining Broadway and Touring Broadway in a central location and under a single site identity,” says Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League. “If you want to see a Broadway show, regardless if you are home or out-of-town, you can go to BROADWAY.ORG to find out where and when it’s playing and easily buy your tickets from the authorized source.”

The new site features a deep integration between the New York City and touring shows. Site users can locate theatres across North America where Broadway shows are playing, and link to their official sites for more information. If they are on the page for a Broadway show, they will also be able to easily view its upcoming tour stops; and when on the page for a show on tour, will be able to see that it is also playing in New York and get information on that production.

The new site provides up-to-date show and theatre information in six languages, a guide to hotel and dining options in Manhattan’s Theatre District, and general information about Broadway theatre-going. It provides access to show tickets at all price points to current and upcoming shows, direct from the theatres’ official ticketing offices in real time, without broker markups.

The thoroughness and simplicity of the new site can be demonstrated with numerous features that are easy to navigate including: Google Maps and social media integration, the ability to search by location, an interactive map of the NYC theatre district and multi-media galleries. The League will be able to communicate timely announcements such as holiday schedules, weather advisories, updates on programs such as Kids’ Night on Broadway®, and more.

The site also features a mobile app for Broadway in New York and later this year an enhanced app to include touring data is being planned. The League’s Digital and Technology team created the new site with the aid of website design firm Lounge Lizard.

For more than a century, Broadway has been considered the pinnacle of live theatrical entertainment.
