Crested Butte Mountain Resort offers Ski Free on Opening Day and lift ticket giveaways up to Nov. 21

October 24, 2012

Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) is giving away a lift ticket a day until Opening Day on November 21, 2012 to lucky fans on their Facebook Page. The free lift tickets will be good for use during the 2012-2013 ski season, with holiday blackout dates of 12/24/2012 – 1/4/2013. “Like” the resort on Facebook and enter to win. With the anticipation of soon being able to let gravity take over on snow covered slopes, the resort realizes that everyone likes to ski for free, so why not let them?

Known for  “ski free” promotions throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, last year, CBMR resurrected the program to offer Ski Free on their 50th birthday, Opening Day 2011. With so much success and excitement built around the one day promotion, the resort has decided to bring back Ski Free on Opening Day. On November 21, 2012, all guests will ski for free at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, no strings attached.

“Ski Free has been synonymous with Crested Butte since the 90s, so why change tradition and offer free skiing on Opening Day?” asks vice president of sales and marketing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Scott Clarkson. “Then we thought it would be fun to give away a few more free days to our loyal social media fans. Go “like” us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, check in on Foursquare when you’re here and enjoy!”

Rules and Regulations for the Sweepstakes are listed on the Crested Butte Hearts Ski Free Sweepstakes page.

February 20, 2012

Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, the largest year-round disabled sports non-profit organization in Vermont offering the most diverse program opportunities and unique, specialized equipment, will host its annual Ski Challenge fundraising event on Saturday, March 10 at Pico Mountain. Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, the largest year-round disabled sports non-profit organization in Vermont offering the most diverse program opportunities and unique, specialized equipment, will host its annual Ski Challenge fundraising event on Saturday, March 10 at Pico Mountain. A retro ’80s is this year’s theme. People do not have to participate in the race to attend the family-friendly gala after the day’s event. Gala-only tickets are available.

In addition, Killington Resort and Pico Mountain are providing lift ticket and season pass fundraising incentives in order for the non-profit to reach its event goal of raising $100,000.

Vermont Adaptive has established a special page on FirstGiving.com, enabling both participants and non-participants in the Ski Challenge to reap the benefits of raising money for Vermont Adaptive. The incentives and fundraising levels include:

$200 in pledges = (1) 2012-13 Pico Mountain Lift Ticket

$300 in pledges = (2) 2012-13 Pico Mountain Lift Tickets

$500 in pledges = (2) 2012-13 Killington Lift Tickets

$750 in pledges = (1) 2012-13 Pico Mountain Season Pass

$1,000 in pledges = (1) 2012-13 Killington Midweek Season Pass

$1,500 in pledges = (1) 2012-13 Killington Unlimited Season Pass

$2,000 in pledges = Complete Rossignol Ski or snowboard Package

Those interested in participating in the fundraising can create an individual fundraising page at http://www.firstgiving.com/sportsforeverybody/ski-challenge-2012

Every $100 in pledges enables Vermont Adaptive to provide a full-day skiing scholarship. The cost of an outing with Vermont Adaptive for the consumer can range from a $15 for a two hour canoeing session to $90 for a full day ski lesson, including instructors, ticket and adaptive equipment. All of the school and advocacy groups that the organization works with are also subsidized by Vermont Adaptive; school groups are charged a reduced rate starting at 50% off, and participants receive the same one on one experience as any individual who participates.

“We believe sports and recreation provide a physical, mental and social experience that is immeasurable in promoting self-confidence and independence in an individual,” said Erin Fernandez, executive director. “This is our largest winter fundraiser and monies raised will help us to underwrite some of the costs of our adaptive programs and allow more people with disabilities to participate. We are so thankful to our resort partners like Killington and Pico, who continually step up and come through with us with amazing support. We couldn’t be who we are without partners like them.”

This year’s Ski Challenge includes a day filled with skiing and fun, timed racing and a night complete with family-friendly grazing stations with a retro-’80s theme and music, awards, and dancing. Saturday begins with check-in for participants from 8 – 9:30 a.m. in the Sunshine Room in the Pico Mountain base lodge. The fun race begins at 10 a.m. The race is open to all ages and abilities of skiers, riders and tele-skiers. Each racer will complete two times runs. Participants are encouraged to create teams of three and compete in costumes as well. Awards will be made in various categories for all participants, from best individual times to fasted teams, best costume, youngest and oldest participants, as well as acknowledging top fundraisers.

Beginning at 4 p.m. the event moves to the Killington Grand Hotel. A cash bar and Silent Auction begin at 4 p.m. Then the night continues with awards, dinner and dancing. The Silent Auction will wrap up around 7:30 p.m. A DJ will be spinning retro ’80s tunes.

Registration includes a special wool IBEX Outdoor Clothing beanie as well as full-day lift ticket for March 10, 2012 to Pico, Ski Challenge festivities, awards, and the après-ski party. Apres-ski party tickets can be purchased in advance as well. Registration is online at www.vermontadaptive.org.

Ski New Hampshire Resorts Offer Deals, Special Events for February Vacation Weeks

February 15, 2012

Snowboarding at Waterville Valley. New Hampshire ski resorts now have a deep base of snow for skiing and riding, and special deals and events for the February vacation © 2012 Karen Rubin/news-photos-features.com.

The slow snow start of the 2011-12 ski season is now a distant memory with a deep base of snow statewide. The upcoming February school vacation weeks offer kids and families of all ages an opportunity to enjoy the fun part of winter along with special events at the state’s ski resorts.

Thanks to intense snowmaking efforts over the past three months, New Hampshire’s ski areas have made the most of a winter that has brought below-normal snowfall totals to most of the United States. Although many New England residents have bare ground in their yards, most of New Hampshire has natural snow on the ground and alpine areas have enhanced natural snowfall with hundreds of hours of snowmaking. As a result, not only are the downhill conditions surprisingly good, most of New Hampshire’s cross country ski areas are also open with over 450 kilometers of trails available.

“It’s very easy to look out your window at home and assume that the ski areas may not have much snow, which really is an unfortunate misconception. Thanks to cooler temperatures, we’ve retained much of the natural snow that has fallen and ski areas have spared no expense utilizing modern snowmaking technology to pile the snow deep over the past few months,” stated Alice Pearce, Ski NH’s president.

Vacation weeks allow families to enjoy time together and take advantage of the fun part of winter in New England. Ski areas realize that and offer a variety of activities to entertain everyone. Special events are scheduled through the week including fireworks displays, family ski races, après ski entertainment for adults and kids, and much more. For a complete list visit SkiNH.com.

Among the offerings are Disney’s Get Out and Play with giveaways, games and more at Gunstock on February 18. King Pine at Purity Spring Resort will host Retro Day and a Scavenger Hunt on February 19. The Mountain Dew Vertical Challenge family-friendly race series visits Black Mountain, Crotched Mountain, and Mount Sunapee over the holiday break. Live music and auctions are part of the Childhood Cancer Lifeline Event at Pats Peak on February 25-26.

New Hampshire’s ski areas also continue to offer a wide variety of year-round attractions for guests. Among the non-skiing activities offered are mountain coasters, zip line rides, canopy tours, giant swings, dog sled and sleigh rides, ice skating and much more.

Although it may be considered a holiday period at resorts, many discount offers are still available. Ski NH’s Anywhere, Anytime Lift Ticket Packages offer $11-$21 off of holiday lift ticket rates, are valid anyday, and are fully-transferable so they can be shared with family and friends. Many ski areas also have daily lift ticket specials, discounts for buying online in advance, family deals and much more. Visit SkiNH.com for full details on all of these February vacation offers.

Ski NH is the statewide association representing 38 alpine and cross country resorts and more than 200 lodging and guest service properties in New Hampshire. New Hampshire Ski Resorts offer Super Deals for Super Bowl Weekend

January 27, 2012

Snowboarding down a trail at Waterville Valley, a premeir New Hampshire ski resort. New Hampshire mountain resorts are offering super deals for Super Bowl weekend © 2012 Karen Rubin/news-photos-features.com.

The New England Patriots and New York Giants will face off in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, February 5. The Super Bowl is a traditional occasion for family and friends to gather to enjoy the game. The 6:30 pm kickoff time is ideal for skiers and riders who want to enjoy a weekend on the snow and still be on the couch for kickoff with plenty of time to spare.

During past Patriots’ Super Bowl appearances many guests have elected to pass up skiing and riding that weekend even though the game isn’t played until Sunday night. As a result, this means less-crowded slopes and an opportunity to enjoy midweek crowds with mid-winter conditions. Ski areas have also recognized the popularity of the Super Bowl and many offer lift ticket specials to entice guests.

Among the special offers this Super Bowl weekend is the Super Sunday Special at Cannon Mountain where two people can ski or ride for $68 on February 5. King Pine at Purity Spring Resort will be offering half-day, morning lift tickets for $22 for adults and $15 for juniors on February 5. Attitash Mountain Resort and Wildcat Mountain will be offering $46 all-day lift tickets on February 5. Cranmore Mountain Resort is offering a Super Bowl ECoupon that must be printed in advance from Cranmore.com and is valid for $47 adult, $37 teen, and $32 child lift tickets on February 5. Show up at Gunstock Mountain Resort with your Patriots gear on and receive $12 off a full price adult ticket on February 5. In celebration of Super Bowl XLVI, Waterville Valley will be offering $46 lift tickets for adults and $15 for ages 12 and under on February 5. Ragged Mountain will be offering two-for-one full price lift tickets on February 5.

For cross country skiers Jackson Ski Touring will be hosting Super Bowl Widows Weekend with 50% off one or two day trails passes for groups of three or more women. Pine Hill XC Ski Club in New London will be offering a pre-Super Bowl Two Trail Passes for One promotion.

Many New Hampshire areas also regularly offer discounted passes on Sunday afternoons, which should prove to be an outstanding time to hit the slopes with many skiers and riders already at home on the couch. Even if you ski right until 4pm you still have 2 ½ hours until kickoff. Among those areas with Sunday afternoon offers are Attitash Mountain Resort, Black Mountain, Bretton Woods, Crotched Mountain, King Pine at Purity Spring Resort, Loon Mountain, Mount Sunapee, Ragged Mountain, Waterville Valley and Wildcat Mountain. Some of these offers apply to specific groups (like NH residents or kids) so please check for full details on the Daily Ticket Deals page at SkiNH.com.

“The first year or two the Patriots made the Super Bowl, we noticed some extra space on the slopes. Now that the Patriots make this almost an annual tradition, the ski areas have gotten creative with some incredible deals. Super Bowl weekend provides an ideal opportunity to enjoy mid-winter conditions at a discount price, with fewer skiers on the slopes, and still be home in time for the game,” stated Karl Stone, Ski NH’s Marketing Director.

For a complete list of deals and updated snow conditions, visit SkiNH.com or XCSkiNH.com.

Crested Butte Hosts Two Distinct Nordic Ski Races – Alley Loop and Elk Mountains Grand Traverse

January 3, 2012

The Alley Loop Nordic Ski Race is one of the events that have put Crested Butte Mountain Resort on the map (photo courtesy of Xavier Fane/Crested Butte Nordic Center).

The 26th annual Alley Loop and 15th annual Elk Mountains Grand Traverse are two distinct ski races that have helped put Crested Butte, Colo., on the map as a place that does everything with its own distinctive style. Both have new happenings to announce for 2012 and are spearheaded by Crested Butte Nordic Center.

Alley Loop, February 4
Growing in prestige and numbers over the past decade, the Crested Butte Nordic Council’s Alley Loop has been selected to join the American Ski Marathon Series (ASM Series), North America’s longest-running and largest citizen’s racing and touring series. Already an American Birkebeiner qualifier, the Alley Loop drew more than 550 skiers from 17 states in 2011.

With 14 races from Vermont to Alaska, the ASM Series includes such renowned events as the American Birkebeiner, Yellowstone Rendezvous and Tour of Anchorage. The Gunnison Valley Health Alley Loop is one of only four races in the western United States and the only Colorado event in the series. “We’ve been wanting to add another western event for a number of years,” says J.D. Downing, director of the American Ski Marathon Series, “and the Alley Loop ended up being the perfect fit.”

The 26th annual Gunnison Valley Health Alley Loop, known for its fun spirit and participation from both serious and not-so-serious costumed racers of all ages, is scheduled for Feb. 4, 2012. The competition is distinguished by a unique course that starts and finishes on the town’s main street, Elk Avenue, before meandering through snow-lined alleys, behind false-fronted Victorian buildings, over footbridges, alongside residences and out to groomed trails in the outskirts of town. Ranging from 1.5 and 3 kilometer races for children and families to half and full marathons, crowds line the streets and alleys to cheer on racers.

The 1.5 and 3 kilometer races begin at 9:30 a.m., and the rest start at intervals beginning at 10 a.m. New Belgium Brewing’s Taste of the Alley Beer Garden on the deck of the Brick Oven offers a great spot to watch the action and socialize from noon to 4 p.m. Registration is now open on the Crested Butte Nordic Center’s website at www.cbnordic.org. Complete information about the ASM Series can be found at www.xcskiworld.com.

Elk Mountains Grand Traverse, March 29 – 31
One of the most sought-after and rugged backcountry ski races on the planet celebrates 15 years of memorable moments and amazing athletic feats on March 29 – 31. The GORE-TEX Elk Mountains Grand Traverse presented by Outdoor Research and Dynafit follows historic mail routes that connected the Colorado mining towns of Crested Butte and Aspen in the 1880s.

Kicking off at the stroke of midnight on March 30, the Grand Traverse is a one-of-a-kind test of endurance and smarts, requiring avalanche awareness, backcountry athleticism, winter camping knowledge and map reading skills all wrapped in one. This unusual start time is scheduled so entrants will reach the high point of Star Pass at 12,303 feet before the warmth of the day increases the likelihood of avalanches. The 40-mile course starts at 9,000 feet at Crested Butte Community School and traverses to Crested Butte Mountain Resort, where cheering crowds greet racers as they pass through the base area just below the Silver Queen lift. After conquering two mountain passes, the teams finish at the base of Aspen Mountain ski area on March 31 and celebrate that evening with a cocktail party, dinner and awards in Aspen.

“The Grand Traverse is not a Nordic or downhill race, but instead tests skiers overall skills and goes from town-to-town, covering 40 miles of rugged trails in the Elk Mountains. Every event dishes up new surprises for contestants and organizers,” says Keith Bauer, director of the Crested Butte Nordic Center, which has assumed responsibility of the race from a group of longtime volunteers.

A two-day registration and expo are new for this year. Because of the remote route, each team of two is required to carry enough food and supplies to sustain themselves for 24 hours. Upon registration, the team’s packs are checked for essential gear such as a two-person shelter, stove, fuel, shovel, probe, first-aid kit and equipment repair items.

Sponsors Dynafit and Outdoor Research will have product demonstrations available at the base of CBMR, and racers can take part in a “skin with the pros” on March 29 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and March 30 from 7:30 – 9 a.m. The tour will follow the section of course that crosses CBMR terrain and give competitors a chance to do some final equipment tweaks with the help of experienced Grand Traverse racers. On Thursday evening, race organizers will have a film festival featuring backcountry ski movies at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square, which is free to all racers and open to the public for $8 per person.

Registration for the Grand Traverse sold out within 30 minutes on Dec. 1, with 150 teams of two filling the slots. To see if any openings become available, watch the Elk Mountains Grand Traverse Facebook page. Trackleaders will provide SPOT-based so the progress of all racers can be monitored on www.elkmountainstraverse.com and www.trackleaders.com.

January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, and there is no better place to experience the thrill of learning to ski or ride than in its original state. Vermont has some of the best and most experienced instructors in the world, and plenty of terrain specifically for those starting out. Best of all, first-timers can learn for as little as $29. This unprecedented offer is only in January; only in Vermont.

“In a state that welcomes seven times its population in skier visits annually, we’ve truly earned our reputation as being the premiere learn to ski and ride destination,” Ski Vermont President Parker Riehle said. “Newcomers to these sports can appreciate Vermont’s iconic landscape, its esteemed ski heritage and highly certified professional instructors.”

To spread the love of winter to new enthusiasts, 13 Vermont resorts are offering beginner lessons for the entire month of January, excluding holiday periods (January 1 and January 14-15) for $29. The beginner lesson will include a full day beginner lift ticket, full day ski or snowboard equipment rental, and a lesson with a professional instructor. Due to the deeply discounted price, the offer is limited to one beginner package per person.

Specific age restrictions include:

Valid for ages 4 and over: Bolton Valley Resort
